There were times when he could swear she felt the same way about him, then she’d bring up moving out like she couldn’t wait to be free of him.

It was Valentine’s Day, and he was in a quandary.

When he bought her engagement and wedding rings, he’d bought earrings, too, intending to give them to her on their one-year anniversary.

Since there wasn’t going to be an anniversary, he still wanted her to have them—even if it was just to pawn them with her rings.

On one hand, she was still his wife and the mother of his child, so giving her a Valentine’s present was completely justifiable. On the other, she’d said no gifts.

He decided they’d be from Sawyer. Yeah, it was a loophole, but so what. He also sent her two dozen roses from her son.

Two hours later, his phone rang. He looked down to see her name on his screen and smiled.

“Hi there.”

“Don’t ‘hi there’ me, Pete Mitchell. What did I say about no gifts?”

“I didn’t get you a gift.”

“Oh, so Sawyer called up the florist, used his credit card, and had two dozen red roses delivered to me?”

“Well, he asked me to, so I helped him out.”

She sighed. “Dammit, Maverick. They’re so beautiful, and they smell so good, and now I’m going to have to get the baby dressed and go out and buy you something from him. And to top it off, I have no idea what to get you. You have every tool known to man, more clothes than any guy I’ve ever met, and I can’t afford to buy you a new car.”

That made him laugh.

“I don’t know, I think I lost a few tools last month, somehow.”

“I didn’t lose any of your tools, just may have rearranged them when I was looking for the hammer.”

“I thought it was a screwdriver…”

“Whatever.”

“And, actually, you can afford whatever you want—you’re still my wife.”

“Like I’d spend your money. And that’s not even the point!”

“Look,” he said calmly. “You don’t need tobuyme anything. You’re making me dinner—that’s my present.”

“It’s not the same.”

“Are you kidding? It’s better. You’re putting effort into this meal. I just made a phone call. If anything, your present is way more thoughtful.”

“You still shouldn’t have gotten me anything.” Her pout came through the phone, and he couldn’t help but smile as he pictured her with her arms folded across her chest with a scowl on her face.

“Like I said, I didn’t.”

“Then I guess I don’t need to worry about thanking you properly.”

His face fell at that, and he cried, “Aw, no fair.”

“Sorry, I don’t make the rules.”

He wasn’t sure that was true. It sure seemed like she did.
