The moment I’m really trapped, though, is when Rory buries his face in my neck from behind, arms going around my waist. “I don’t really care that someone might walk back here,” he murmurs against my skin. One of his hands slips around my hips, dragging against my skin over my costume before his fingers curl, nails digging into my thigh.

“Shouldn’t, uh…” It’s really hard to think when I can feel Rory’s teeth on my neck, scraping against my skin in ways that send heat pooling to my center. “Shouldn’t you guys be focusing or planning or, umm… Practicing?” When Phoenix just looks at me, I move my hand in what might be a stabbing motion, but looks like something a lot less public appropriate.

“Should we be…?” Obviously, Phoenix doesn’t see it for what it’s supposed to be either, because the grin on his face is too quick to be wiped away or ignored. “I mean, if you’d rather, we could probably skip this and take you back to the hotel for somestabbingpractice, Bailey—”

“Fuck you,” I hiss, only to end up with a yelp on my lips when Rory bites down on my throat.

“Yeah.” The auburn-haired serial killer chuckles against my skin. “That’s absolutely the plan.”

“We can’t do anything until closer to Halloween,” Phoenix whispers, leaning in close to say it. “It’s just not the right time yet. You’ll see, Bailey. Everything will be taken care of by Halloween, I promise.”

“Will you leave again, after?” I find myself asking, though I swear I hadn’t meant to let the words escape my lips.

Neither of them answers. Instead, Rory runs his fingers up and down my sides, nose soft against the side of my throat. “It’s still a little while away,” he mollifies, and my heart dips at his words. He doesn’t want to answer, because the answer isyes.

“You can’t finger her behind a tent,” Phoenix observes, one brow raised as he pulls back enough to watch Rory’s hand dip under my clothes, dragging downward. I whimper in protest, gripping his forearm with nails that bite into his skin.

“Why?” Rory’s head tilts, a cheshire grin on his face. “Why the fuck can’t I? All I have to do is step here…” He takes a few steps, pulling me with him, until we’re better hidden between two storage areas of the vendors behind us. But the sound of the festival is loud in my ear, reminding me of where we areand how close my parents are to us.

Yet I’m not exactly stopping Rory. My eyes close hard as Phoenix steps forward, forming a wall between us and anyone that might walk by.

“Someone is going to see,” I hiss, reaching out to grip Phoenix’s hand hard. “Myparentsare going to walk by, or something.”

“Maybe I should be offended you aren’t willing to risk it to come on my fingers.” Rory’s voice is light, mocking, and not one bit serious. But he does let his hand slide up my body, snagging under my shirt so he can splay his fingers against my stomach.

“Maybe you should be,” I agree slyly, leaning my head back with a sigh of relief. “So sorry I’m not willing to get disinherited for sex.”

“Good sex,” Phoenix points out.

“I’m not arguing that.” I lean forward to slide my lips against his, aware of Rory using it as an excuse to palm my ass through my leggings. “I’m sure it’samazingsex. But it’s going to have to wait.”

“The longer we wait, the more I’m going to ruin you,” Rory murmurs quietly, seconds before voices alert us to the fact that we’re about to have company.

Thankfully, by the time the young couple comes around the tents, we’re no longer in any kind of compromising position. We smile at them, trying to make it look like we were just back here to pick up supplies, and the fact that these tents aren’t ours doesn’t factor into us looking like we weren’t doing something inappropriate.

“I’ll see you later.” I sigh, once the two of them are gone. “Mom and Dad are going to send out search parties soon.”

“Yeah, my mom is going to start calling, I’m sure,” Phoenix agrees.

Rory just smirks. “My mom is probably working with one of our neighbor’s horses to teach it how to drive cattle. She doesn’t mind if I’m out late.”

“Your mom sounds cool,” I say over my shoulder, hand raised in farewell. “We get to meet her next, right? Since you know our parents?”

“Sure,” Rory assures me, hooking an arm around Phoenix’s shoulders and pulling him close so he can press an open-mouthed kiss to his jaw, as if he’s worried Phoenix might have felt left out before. “I hope you both know how to ride, though. Everyone in my home town does, and Mom’s going to have horses ready the moment we show up.”

I don’t say anything else, but I do turn quickly so I can hide my smile as I walk back to my parents’ booth. I’m ridiculously pleased and surprised at the fact Rory comes from such an idyllic background, and that he’s apparently willing to show both Phoenix and me.

Chapter23

Idon’t realize how little I want to be alone until I’m sitting on my own, in my room, feeling like the walls are closing in around me. My fingers clench and unclench around the blanket pooled in my lap, and I have no idea where either of my cats are.

Not that they’d help much with the lonely, empty feeling that’s hollowing out my chest and making its way ominously towards my stomach. I run my fingertips along the softness, staring up at the ceiling. I could always call either of the guys, I suppose. They’d probably come back and get me, or at least let me walk across town to the small hotel they’re staying at.

But something about the idea makes my stomach twist into knots. I don’t want them to think I’m weak, or clingy, or attached.

I don’t want them to have any reason to get rid of me.

My fingers tighten at that, but my grip relaxes a second later, my shoulders falling from where it feels like they’re on the same level as my ears. Mom and Dad won’t be home for a while, I’m sure. And since it’s still light out, if only somewhat, I just feel like I should be doing something.
