I laughed, feeling light as the bedroom door before Tenley’s room swung open.

Freezing in place, my gaze snapped to her grandparents filling the empty space, the light in the background silhouetting their figures. Tenley stiffened in my arms, and then I quickly helped her scramble to the ground. Her face was pale as her bare feet plunked on the carpet.

Irene and Frank stared at us.

I clenched my jaw and stared in return, wondering what was about to happen.

Mindlessly, I kept one of my hands on the small of Tenley’s back, and she didn’t move away from my touch.

Frozen as still as I was.

Slowly, her grandma lifted a brow. “We just wanted to remind you that we are right next door. With only a thin wall separating our bedrooms. Just as we were earlier this evening. You know, several hours ago. We are really close,” Irene said, and pointed between the two of us, narrowing her gaze.

Frank said nothing as we remained locked in a silent battle.

And they backed into the bedroom, closing the door very, very slowly. I watched until I heard the click and it had been closed tightly before I pulled my lips between my teeth and I looked at Tenley.

“Didn’t stop me last time,” I growled, and her eyes widened.

She squeaked, slapping her hands over her bright red cheeks, and dashed off into her bedroom, leaving me alone. I watched as she disappeared behind the door, rather pleased with my witty comment, and even more so with her reaction.

Chuckling quietly, I followed her into her bedroom and found her curled up beneath the sheets, covered from head to toe. Hiding.

“Weston,” she began, her voice muffled by the blankets as I began stripping off my pearl snap shirt.

“What’s up, darling?” I asked, setting my duffel down beside her dresser and unzipping it.

“I think we should build the pillow wall again, just for tonight,” she hesitantly said.

“No can do,” I replied, unbuckling my jeans and letting them fall to the carpet floor.

“What? Why not?” she said, and her head popped out over the top of the covers. Her eyes widened, scanning me from head to toe. “Weston!”

“Your fault for looking,” I teased, folding the mostly clean jeans neatly beside the bag to wear again in a couple hours.

“You could’ve warned me you were undressing.”

“Why the sudden bashfulness? If memory serves, you were the one taking my clothes off last time.” I dug through my duffel, pulling out a pair of shorts.

“That was different!” she gasped, burying herself back under the blankets.

I laughed again, saying nothing as I turned off the light and walked to the side of the bed closest to the door. She was absolutely adorable. Sitting down on the edge of the mattress, I removed the watch from my wrist, and placed it with my phone on the nightstand.

“By the way, why can’t we have a pillow wall?” she asked, and I could feel her shift on the bed, her voice no longer muffled by the covers.

“Not enough pillows.”

I grinned to myself, scanning the disarray of her room. There were totally enough pillows.

“Weston…” Her voice was right behind me, and I glanced over my shoulder to find her kneeling on the bed, close to my back. “I thought you said you would never lie to me. That you’ve never lied to me.”

“I don’t.”

“And yet, I see plenty of extra decorative pillows on the floor.”

“Where you threw them when undoing the bed,” I teased.

Warm breath brushed against the back of my neck, electricity running through my body. Silence. I dared not move as the heat from her presence slithered across my skin. Trembling, delicate fingers whispered along my sides, trailing slowly to the front of my torso. My chest rose and fell, shallow, rapid breaths pulled in with her touch.
