“It’s been in the works for a month,” she admitted.

“And you just now are bothering to tell me?”

“Honestly, it was because I didn’t want to deal with all of the drama.”

“I’m going to talk to the lawyer about this,” he said.

“Go ahead. I already consulted my lawyer. As long as we are close enough that I can honor the custody agreement, then I am okay,” she said.

“You won’t get away with this,” he said.

He stood up abruptly, knocking his chair over as he stormed out of the diner. Everyone was silent and stared in her direction.

“Well, that went better than I thought,” she said to myself.

“Are you sure that you want to do this?” Dillon asked Greta and Frank after they met with the realtor to sell their café. “You spent your entire life building up this place.”

“We have and we love the café. We’re both sad to be selling it,” Frank said. “It was a really hard decision, but one that we both think is for the best.”

“I hate to see you leave Ivy Springs,” Dillon said. “All of us will.”

“We hate to go. We just feel like it’s the right thing to do. There is so much violence against shifters. We are being actively hunted all the time. It’s hard to go to sleep at night, not knowing whether we will be murdered in our sleeps if someone just happens to mention that we are shifters,” Greta said. “Besides, Florida weather really will be better for our old joints.”

Dillon was sad that Greta and Frank thought that it was best for them to move. The official story was that they were retiring to Florida for the warmer weather. Everyone in the shifter community knew the real reason why they were moving. The war between the shifters and the mundane humans was making life dangerous in Ivy Springs. Greta and Frank had decided that they were just too old to fight.

He wondered what kind of people his new neighbors were, so he decided to go introduce himself.

There was something about Clara that caught his attention immediately. He was sure that he could get lost in her deep blue eyes. Dillon had a sudden urge to reach out and touch her long dark brown hair to see if it was as silky as it looked.

Where in the hell did those thoughts come from?he asked himself.

Dillon wasn’t a fanciful or romantic person by nature. He was shocked when he shook her hand and a feeling of warmth passed between them.

It’s been too long since I’ve been with a woman,he thought. It might be time to get out for a weekend.

He liked Zeke immediately. The little boy was very direct and to the point. Dillon wondered if Clara was the same way.

“Welcome to Ivy Springs,” he told Clara and Zeke. “I hope you love it here.”

“I’m sure that we will,” Clara said.

“What brings you to our city?”

“A change of scenery,” Clara said vaguely.

Dillon had thought that there was more to the story than that, but he wasn’t going to pry. It really wasn’t his business.

He went back to his store with his coffee. Jesse, who was the leader of a group of shifters who patrolled the area, trying to spot hunters and keep other shifters safe, came into the store.

After looking around to make sure that no one could overhear them, he said, “So, it’s official. Greta and Frank sold the café.”

“I just met the new owner. She seems like she is a nice person. She has a son who is adorable,” Dillon said.

“Human?” Jesse asked.
