“Would a shifter willingly move to Ivy Springs?” Dillon asked.

“Good point,” Jesse said.

“Any interesting news?”

“There doesn’t seem to have been any skirmishes recently,” Jesse said. “Right now, all of the shifters in the area are accounted for. There haven’t been any conversations about anyone being targeted.”

“That is a relief, after the battle that just took place,” Dillon replied.

A couple of weeks ago, five hunters got into a battle with a group of shifters. One of the shifters, whose family had been in the area for generations was hurt and exposed, so he and his human girlfriend were forced to escape to the shifter world. Three of the hunters were killed.

“The last of the funerals was this morning, wasn’t it?” Dillon asked.

“It was. The Faisons sent a representative to attend for them,” Jesse said.

“You didn’t really expect any of them to attend the funeral in person, did you?” Dillon asked.

“No. They didn’t go to the other two funerals. They simply sent flowers and a representative,” Jesse said.

“You would think that at least one of them would show up, since the hunters worked for them,” Dillon said. “To keep up appearances and all that.”

“I just can’t see that happening,” Jesse said. “They’re above all of that. They probably think that they’re being magnanimous just for sending flowers and the representative, who was likely paid to go.”

The Faisons were the billionaires who ran Forest Resort, one of the premier tourist resorts in the state. It was very well known that the family had a special hatred for shifters and worked with hunters to go after anyone suspected of being a shifter. There were four of them. Raf was the oldest. Jerry and Xavier were his brothers. Their sister, Alexis, was the youngest, and perhaps the most spoiled of the bunch.

“To be honest, there were only a couple of people who showed up this morning, same as with the others,” Jesse said.

“I guess that some people figure that they are good enough to hang around and do their job but really don’t want to associate with them,” Dillon said. “Although I’m surprised that there isn’t an outcry about how dangerous shifters are and that they should all be killed.”

“I’m sure that is what is being said behind closed doors,” Jesse said. “However, no one is going to talk about shifters in the public. Most people don’t believe that they exist.”

“Thank goodness for small favors,” Dillon said.

Dillon closed the store up a couple of hours early. He headed into the mountains. He looked nervously around him to make sure that there were no hunters or mundane humans lurking about. He quickly undressed and hid his clothes under a rock. Then, he shifted into his wolf form.

He loved being a wolf. He always felt so free when he was in this form.

Dillon started off at a quick trot. It was a long way to the shifter world. He was actually starting to feel a little tired when he reached the shimmery portal. A rattlesnake coiled up and looked ready to strike until she recognized him.

“Hello, Dillon,” she said, telepathically. “How are things going in your life?”

“Pretty good, Chloe. How are you?

“I can’t complain. I’ve got a good job where I get to spend most of the day lazing about and blending in. It’s probably the only job in the world where you get paid to relax,” she said.

“You are always on your toes though. I’ve never been able to get past you,” Dillon said.

“My shift is over in an hour. How about a drink?” she said.

“I’d love to, but after I’m done with the dragon king, I have to get back. I can’t afford to make anyone suspicious.”

“I just couldn’t live like that – always feeling as though my every move was being scrutinized under a microscope,” she said.

“It’s my job to keep an eye on things and report to the dragon king,” Dillon said.

“I’ll take mine over yours,” she said.

Dillon laughed and said, “We’ll have that drink another time,” and he stepped through the portal.
