“They do, but they would rather endure anything than betray their own people,” Jamie said.

Clara sat down on one of the stools behind the cabinet.

“I would think that the shifters would be able to take out the hunters if it came to a war,” Clara said. “Why would they want to go to the shifter world?”

“I guess they think that they could win the war,” Jamie said.

“This whole thing sounds stupid to me. They are mad about something that happened a long time ago,” Clara said.

“The billionaire had started to hate shifters way before his daughter ran off with the dragon king’s son. He hated them just because they were different,” Jamie said.

“That seems to be a common problem in the world,” Clara said.

She looked at her friend, whose face was red and blotchy from crying. Clara felt helpless and wished that there was something that she could do to help. However, she knew that there was nothing that she could say or do that would make Jamie feel better.

Clara asked, “Do you need to go home?”

“No,” Jamie said. “I’d rather be here. At home, I would just sit on the couch and cry, which won’t do anyone any good.”

That evening, Clara got a phone call from Charlie.

“Hey, woman,” Charlie said. “I’ve got some time off and want to know if you want a visitor.”

“I would love to have a visitor,” Clara said.

“Awesome. I’ll be there in a couple of hours,” Charlie said. “I’m already packed and ready to go.”

Zeke wanted to stay up until his “Aunt Charlie” came, but Clara said, “It will be too late by the time that she gets here. You and Reno need to go to bed. You’ll see her when you wake up.”

“But, Mom, I want to stay up,” Zeke said, stomping his foot.

Clara turned around and gave him the mom look.

Zeke stared back at her for a second and then decided that it was in his best interest to get ready for bed.

Charlie arrived a couple of hours later.

Once they settled in, Charlie asked, “What has been going on around here?”

“Not a lot. You know that I’ve been seeing Dillon,” Clara said.

“Ah, Dillon. The hot shop keeper,” Charlie said.

She looked at Clara for a minute and said, “You didn’t tell me that you’ve been sleeping with him.”

“How did you know?” Clara asked.

“It’s written all over your face,” Charlie said. “So, how is it?”

“You expect me to kiss and tell?” Clara asked.

“Of course,” Charlie said.

“The sex is wonderful. I never knew that it could be so great,” Clara said.

“It is great when you have a lover who cares about how you feel and isn’t concentrating just on getting himself off.”

“It feels like more than just sex, though,” Clara said. “It feels more like making love. There is some kind of connection between the two of us that I’ve never felt before.”
