He quickly made his way to the palace where Draco, the dragon king, who ruled the shifter world, lived.

“I was expecting you today,” Draco said. “You never disappoint.”

Dillon just bowed to the king.

Noah Williams, a bear shifter, joined them just as Dillon was standing up. Noah also bowed to the king.

“How are you feeling?” Dillon asked.

“I’m doing well. I’ve completely recovered from my injuries,” Noah said.

“Glad to hear it.”

Noah asked, “How are things with you?”

“Everything is good,” Dillon said.

He turned his attention back to the dragon king.

“Since the skirmish between Noah, the other shifters and the hunters, things have been quiet. The last of the funerals took place this morning. Jesse went to all three of them. He said that very few people attended the funerals. The Faisons sent flowers and a representative,” Dillon said.

“Figures,” Draco said. “They’re too good to go to a regular person’s funeral. There’s no one to be seen by.”

“Greta and Frank Jackson are leaving for Florida. They have sold their café to a woman named Clara Montgomery. From what I can tell, she is a human. She seems to be a nice woman,” Dillon reported.

“Who can blame them for trying to get out of town,” Draco said. “They are an older couple, and they probably don’t want to have to worry about being a part of the war. There are hunters everywhere, but in a place like Ivy Springs, where everyone knows everyone’s business, it can be particularly dangerous.”

“That is especially true since neither the hunter nor the Faisons seem to care about whether they are targeting true shifters, or if they just get suspicious,” Noah said. “They went after April simply because they thought that she might have seen a shifter.”

April was the human who Noah had recently fallen in love with after saving her life more than once.

“The Faisons don’t seem to be getting extremely reckless right now, so they aren’t killing people willy nilly,” Dillon said.

“Give them time,” Noah said, dryly.

Dillon had to admit that it didn’t seem to be farfetched to think that the Faisons would be indirectly responsible for innocent mundane humans in their quest to hunt and destroy all shifters.

“Hopefully, everything will stay quiet for at least a little while longer,” Draco said. “Keep me informed of anything and everything.”

With that, Dillon knew he was dismissed.

He headed back through the portal, carefully looking around to make sure that no one saw him suddenly appearing out of nowhere. The only person around was the rattlesnake who had exchanged places with Chloe.

It was dark by the time that Dillon made it back down the mountain. The moon was full and he had to resist the urge to tilt back his head and let loose with one good howl. The last thing that he needed to do was get noticed by a hunter.

Clara

Clara was grateful that she had enough money left over to hire a moving company that would move her and Zeke’s stuff to Ivy Springs. She couldn’t imagine trying to hire a big U-haul and then loading it with Charlie’s help, and then driving it up the windy mountain roads to the picturesque city.

She looked around the apartment one last time to make sure that neither she nor Zeke had left anything behind. Then, she firmly closed the door on that life.

Charlie followed her up to help her unpack and get everything settled.

“I don’t know what I would do without you,” Clara said.

“I think that you would be totally lost,” Charlie said.
