“He’s okay. He misses his mother. Jamie is watching him now, and I’ll watch him tonight until Charlie is kicked out of her room because visiting hours are over,” Dillon said.

“Charlie’s here, huh?” Ethan asked.

“Yep,” Dillon said.

Although Ethan would never admit it, Dillon suspected that Ethan liked Charlie a lot.

That evening, Dillon picked up Zeke and Reno and headed to the hospital. They left Reno in the truck with the air conditioner on while Zeke went in to spend a couple of minutes with his mom.

“Mom,” Zeke said. “I miss you.”

“I miss you, too. What have you been doing?”

“The same as I usually do. I’m being good for Jamie and Dillon,” he said.

“I know that you are, and I’m very proud of you,” Clara said.

Zeke got in the bed next to his mother and laid his head on her chest. The scene melted Dillon’s heart.

“When are you coming home?”

“In a few days,” Clara said.

After half an hour, it was time for them to leave.

Clara reached up and hugged Dillon.

“Thank you for taking care of Zeke and for bringing him here.”

“You’re welcome,” he said, brushing a kiss across her lips.

“I’ll be at the house in about an hour and half when they kick me out of here,” Charlie said.

Dillon nodded and looked down at Zeke.

“How about pizza for dinner?” he asked.

“Yeah. I love pizza. It’s my favorite,” Zeke said.

Clara laughed as the two left.

Dillon ordered the pizza, and then he and Zeke played ball outside. He loved hearing the sound of Zeke’s laughter. Once it got dark, they went back inside, and Dillon watched as Reno and Zeke rolled the ball back and forth to each other.

“Alright, Zeke, it’s time to get ready for bed,” Dillon said.

Zeke brushed his teeth and got into his jammies. Then, he made room on his bed so that he and Dillon could read together.

Charlie came in an hour later.

“How is she doing?” Dillon asked.

“She is doing well. She fell asleep right after you guys left. I think the morphine is keeping her sleepy.”

“She’ll heal faster that way,” Dillon said. “Rest is the best medicine here.”

He went back to his place. He grabbed a beer and sat on the couch. After the laugher and fun of hanging out with Zeke, the silence was deafening.

The truth of the situation hit him like a ton of bricks.
