“No, dogs are generally not allowed,” Clara said.
“Are you going to be okay?” Zeke asked.
“I have to stay here for a couple of days, but I’ll be fine,” Clara said.
“Why did Dad hurt you?” Zeke asked.
“I don’t know. I guess he was just upset,” Clara said.
“I think he forgot to use his words,” Zeke declared.
“I think so, too.”
The nurse came in and said that it was time for Zeke’s visit to end.
Zeke hugged Clara tightly and said, “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” she said.
She looked over at Jamie and said, “Thank you for watching out for him.”
“He’s a doll. It’s a pleasure,” she said.
After they left, Clara called Charlie and explained to her what happened. Charlie said that she would be there in a couple of hours.
Clara was sleepy since the morphine was starting to kick in. She fell asleep with Dillon holding her hand.
Dillon was still there when she woke up again. He got her a drink of water and brushed a lock of hair out of her face.
At that moment, Clara knew that she had fallen in love with Dillon, but she was terrified. Once upon a time, she thought that she was in love with John. Look where that got her.
John and Dillon are not the same men,her mind insisted.
Still, a part of her was terrified.
Charlie arrived like a whirlwind. Dillon decided that he could leave Clara in Charlie’s capable hands and left after brushing a kiss across her lips.
“Where is that son of a bitch? I’m going to throat punch him,” Charlie said. “Maybe worse. I’ve seenFried Green Tomatoes.”
Clara coughed and said, “Don’t make me laugh. I really can’t see you turning John into barbeque.”
“Where’s Zeke?” Charlie asked.
“At the house with Jamie. She and Dillon have taken turns watching him.”
“Good. He’s safe. I’ll just stay with you,” she said.
Clara nodded. Her eyes were getting heavy. As she dozed off to sleep, she thought about Dillon and the love that she was terrified to feel.

“How is Clara doing?” Ethan asked, when Dillon got back from a visit with Clara.
“She’s doing okay. She hurts, but she is going to be okay,” Dillon said. “The doctor moved her out of the ICU and into a regular room. She can’t move around a lot or she’ll start bleeding again. They want to make sure that she doesn’t end up with an infection.”
“I’m glad that she is okay,” Ethan said. “How is her little boy?”
