I stopped by the bridal shop on Wednesday for one last fitting before work. By now, Jasmine and I knew that getting me into the dress was a two-person job.

Jasmine squared her shoulders as I entered the back room that had transformed into her office.

“You know the drill. Shoes off, suck in. Apologize to Jazz and Minn,” she ordered.

I was laughing too hard to suck in. “For the last time, we’re not naming them that!” I said as I slipped my shoes and took off my clothes.

“Well then, what are you naming them?” Jasmine asked. I stepped into the dress, and she yanked the skirt onto my hips. I took the bodice and pressed it against my chest; then Jasmine handed me the shawl. Today felt victorious because she did manage to hook the snap at the bottom together and wiggle the zipper a bit. We were only sweating a little.

“I don’t know yet. Luckily, we still have a few months to figure that out. But I thought I’d name one after my grandmother if there is a girl. Ophelia is a pretty name, anyway. We could call her Opie.”

“That is sweet. I still can’t believe you don’t know the sex,” Jasmine noted.

I turned to face her. “Listen, they were a surprise, to begin with! We want them to be a surprise when they get here. It’s kind of fun.”

“It’s making me realize that people think green is the only gender-neutral color,” Jasmine added.

“I apologize for the amount of moss green that’s about to be in your children’s wardrobe,” Jasmine said.

I turned back to the mirror and examined myself in the dress. Jasmine had managed to restore all the original lace detailing fully. The shawl made it look like there were slim cut-outs at the shoulders, modernizing the dress. I hated to admit it, but I looked good—far less like the ghost of weddings past than I did when I first tried it on.

“That’s okay. Maybe they’ll have green eyes like Sebastian, and then it’ll match.”

“You know, the fact that he was a massive asshole when we met distracted me at first, but I have to admit he’s easy on the eyes,” Jasmine said.

I blushed. “He’s pretty cute,” I admitted.

Jasmine giggled. “Now you sound like a teenager! It’s cute to see Becca in love. I never thought I’d see the day.”

“And I never thought I’d see the day that you’d have a serious boyfriend! You’re bringing Jay to the wedding, right? I made sure to add a plus one to your invitation.”

“He’s shopping for a dress shirt as we speak,” Jasmine said. She passed her phone over to me to show me a photo of Jay looking exceedingly handsome in a purple silk button-down.

“What a cutie!”

“He’s cute, and he’s helpful. He’s helping me pick up stuff for your Bachelorette party after this.” Now that Jasmine had finally conquered my dress, she began planning my bachelorette party.

We decided to have one last hurrah at my old apartment by throwing a slumber party. Jasmine was currently trying to buy all the candy in Boston, and I was narrowing down my list of all-time favorite rom-coms.

It was going to be fantastic. Jasmine even invited a couple of my sorority sisters, who knew about my pregnancy, so there’d be no need for me to try and hide anything. I could finally relax and spend some time with my girlfriends.

“What’s he getting?” I asked as I started the arduous process of getting out of my dress.

“I’m not telling you! It’s a surprise! All you need to do is show up to your apartment at seven sharp on Friday,” Jasmine said.

I shook my head. “You could at least give me a hint!”

“No. That goes against the maid of honor and bachelorette party host code.”

“Does it now?”

Jasmine nodded gravely. “It’s in the handbook.”

I swatted her shoulder. “You’re ridiculous, and you’re lucky that I need to check in on The Cookie Cove. Otherwise, I’d be bugging you with questions all day.”

“It’s like they always say, I was saved by the cookie.”

“You could have at least made a joke about how the cookie crumbles,” I noted as I slipped back into my clothes.
