“Well, yes! They’re your children! They’re obviously going to college! You’re the one growing their brains!” Sebastian exclaimed. His forehead was shiny. He was starting to sweat. In fact, he looked a little pale. Suddenly, my arm felt like it was being jerked out of my socket. I looked over to Sebastian, who had fallen onto the floor, stiff as a board.

Carly shook her head. “It happens more than you would think with Dads of multiples. You’re all set. Everyone looks healthy. Of course, we will need to monitor you a little extra as your pregnancy progresses. You’re tiny, so we might schedule a C-Section once it gets closer to your due date. But for now, you’re golden. It said on your intake form that you’re already taking prenatal vitamins?”

“Yes, ma’am,” I said.

“Wonderful. You’re all set. Would you like to hear the heartbeats before you go?” Carly asked.

She helped Sebastian up into a seated position. Sebastian blinked and looked around the room. “When did. I? Oh right, twins. There’s two of them,” he grumbled. Carly helped him up into a seated position and led him to one of the chairs at the edge of the room.

Suddenly, the sound of three distinct heartbeats filled the room— mostly rapid whooshing noises. I realized one of the heartbeats was my own. It was incredible. I thought Sebastian was going to pass out again. His face was scrunched up. It took me a moment to realize he was crying.

“That’s amazing,” he gushed, wiping the tears from the corners of his eyes.

I nodded mutely, unable to process what was happening. The heartbeats made it real. This was happening inside my body.

“Now, how many ultrasound photos would you like?” Carly asked.

“At least four,” I said. I knew Olivia and Jasmine would want their own copies.

“Got it.”

I got up off the table and changed back into my sundress. I sat down next to Sebastian, “Way to leave me hanging,” I said.

Sebastian groaned. “I can’t believe I passed out.”

“Hey, it’s big news. I would have passed out too, except she was like elbow-deep inside of me.”

Sebastian blinked. “You’re making me queasy!”

“Welcome to the club.”

Carly returned with a handful of ultrasound photos and a paper cup full of orange juice. She handed me the photos and gave Sebastian the cup. “For your blood sugar.” He downed it in one gulp.

“Could I have another?” he asked sheepishly.

“Sure thing.”

“Could I get one, too?” I asked. Orange juice suddenly sounded amazing.

“Coming right up.”

Carly handed us our orange juices and ushered us back to the lobby, where I set up my next appointment for a month from now.

My phone dinged with a text from my mother, reminding me that I had a fitting for my dress on Friday. Fuck. My dress! There was absolutely no way in hell that I could fit in my dress when I was seventeen weeks pregnant with twins.

“Are you alright? Now you’re looking a little pale,” Sebastian said.

“I have a fitting on Friday,” I mumbled.

“Oh God,” Sebastian grumbled, realizing the gravity of the situation.

He reached into his pocket for his car keys, and I stopped him.

“I’m calling Albert,” I said.

“I’ll be fine,” Sebastian insisted.

“No way, precious cargo!” I said, shoving an ultrasound photo in his face.
