I sigh. “She tried to paint this afternoon. It, uh… it didn’t go well.”

He grunts.

“Whatever. Tomorrow morning, yeah? We’ll meet you for breakfast.”

Knox brightens. “Yeah. Thanks.”

“Okay…”

“This is my street,” he says, hooking his thumb to the left. “See you tomorrow! Text me.”

So fucking strange.

I stand on the corner and watch him jog away. There’s a hotel halfway down the block, and he turns into it when he reaches it.

I continue on to my car in the parking garage and zip back to my condo. My anticipation notches up with every mile I cover. The elevator can’t move fast enough. Then I drop my fucking keys in front of the door.

When I open it, the only light on is the flickering television, now showing some commentators discussing hockey highlights. They’ve got my team on the screen behind them.

But what I focus on is Melody, asleep on the rug.

I unbutton my slacks and free my suddenly raging erection, letting out a breath. Instead of going to her, though, I head to my room. I unlock the door and shed my fancy clothes, then return for her. I pull her up and into my arms, taking her to my bed.

Where I part her legs and slide into her like I was always meant to be there.

I fuck her with barely restrained anger, gripping her wrists and pinning her lax arms up over her head. Her scars create this fury in me that’s unmatched.

“Your husband will come for you,” I whisper in her ear. “And then I’ll show you that he doesn’t need to stalk your nightmares anymore.”

MELODY

Knox Whiteshaw sits across from me in the small diner’s worn booth. It’s not exactly where I thought I’d be today, especially since yesterday was so…eventful. I woke up tired. In Jacob’s bed, with his cum inside me, with the man himself wrapped around me.

I closed my eyes, and it seemed like only a split second later his alarm was going off.

When he said where we were heading, however… well, I guess I just didn’t really believe it. Not until we got here, and Knox sat opposite me.

Jacob is beside me. I try not to think about it in terms of himkeepingme here, cutting off my escape route. But a lump formed in my throat when I noticed it.

“I brought you something,” Knox says.

My brow furrows.

He pulls a paperback from his jacket pocket and slides it across the table to me.

“Oh. Thanks.”

It’s got an interesting cover. Dark, with a skull and a gold snake on it. I don’t recognize the author’s name, not thatthatmeans anything.

I meet Knox’s blue eyes. “Can I ask… why?”

“I just want to know what you think of it.” He shrugs. “You know, if it’s good or not.”

I glance at Jacob. He lifts his shoulder, too. I guess neither of us can find Knox’s motivation for giving me this book. I mean, it looks like a dark romance. Which isn’t reallyhisspeed.

“Why?” I repeat. “You could read it and decide for yourself.”
