“You’re going tosit and stay,” her mother barks.

It shocks Melody into stillness.

The storytelling has come to an end—and clearly Jessica Cameron came here to fulfil something. Something made her buy a gun and drive up from Beacon Hill to Crown Point to confront her daughter.

“So, what’s it going to be, Mrs. Cameron?”

Her eyes narrow.

“You clearly want something from us. Or you want to kill Melody…. Which isn’t going to happen.”

“Myhusbandwants Melody out of the picture.” She eyes her daughter. “And I’m inclined to agree. He has another parole board hearing coming up. It would look favorably if his only daughter, who was going to testify for his release, was brutally murdered.”

Bile rises up my throat. “You’d hurt her to free your husband?”

“Yes. Ilovehim. And she’s the reason we’ve been apart for seventeen years.” She’s back to spitting hatred.

Melody’s eyes are brimmed with tears.

But then…sirens.

Jessica’s head whips around, listening.

“You kill us, you get caught,” I assure her. “Whatever plan you had is done, or else you’ll never see your husband from a prison three states away.”

She lets out a hissing breath and jumps to her feet. I follow, dragging Melody behind me. We watch Jessica skirt the room and make a beeline for the front door.

“We’re just going to let her go?” Melody whispers, so quietly I barely hear it.

I mean…yeah. Absolutely.

“I’ve had enough of you being held at gunpoint tonight,” I answer.

There’s a muffledthudfrom the front porch. Then the door creaks open again, and Knox appears. Walking backward, dragging Melody’s mother in with him.

“Knocked her out,” he grunts. “Where do you want her?”

“Just there.” I point to a spot on the floor.

Melody stares at us.

Putting my gloves back on, I carefully remove the gun I used to shoot Henry and put it in her mom’s hand. I take her gun and tuck it in the waistband of her jeans.

“Okay, now what?” Knox asks.

I practically shove Melody into his arms. “Now you both get out of here.”

He takes her. She doesn’t protest. I think she might be in shock. Either way, it’s safer for her to go. The police can’t find her with Henry’s blood in her hair. And I don’t want to put her through an interrogation.

So, off she’ll go.

“Jessica.” I kneel in front of her and shake her arm.

Her eyes crack open. “What…?”

“Leave Melody out of your story telling.”

“Or what?” Her fingers tighten around my gun.
