“Or I’ll make sure your husband is dead before his next parole hearing.” Now gloveless, I remove the gun from her hand. I’m careful about where my fingers wrap around the barrel. Got to leave my prints where it’s believable, after all.

I set it on the coffee table and move to the door.

The sound of sirens is getting louder, and I smile to myself.

She’s going to rot in prison if it’s the last thing I do.

“He’s fine,” Knox reassures me.

I pace the hockey house. It’s weird to be here. College kids live here. Well, maybe not at the moment. Except for Jacob’s friends, who are either sleeping or zoned out on the couches in the living room. It’s set up to host a lot of people andfeelslike a college house.

I’m at least ten years older than all of them.

“Can you sit?” Knox grabs my arm and leads me into the kitchen. He points at the small table, smiling when I go without a fight.

Jacob literally forced me out of the house. Knox sped away into the night. We turned the corner onto another street only a moment before police cars screeched onto Jacob’s road from the other end.

Now we’re waiting for them to be done questioning him.

Greyson and Steele are playing a video game. Miles and Willow haven’t come downstairs. And I don’t know where Violet and Aspen are. Sleeping, hopefully. It’s the middle of the night.

I think I’m traumatized from everything that’s happened. All the coping mechanisms in the world can’t help me right the jumbled mess of emotions in my head.

Knox sets down a cup of coffee in front of me. He’s got one for himself, too, and he drags out the chair opposite mine.

The next best thing, besides sinking into a dissociative state and staying there forever, is a distraction. And lucky for me, Knox looks like he’s got a lot on his mind. Which is all I need.

“So…” I raise my eyebrow.

“What?”

“Are you going to tell me what’s going on with you?” I just get the feeling like we’re friends. Whether or not he’ll admit it is another thing entirely. “You’ve been weird.”

He scoffs. “No, I haven’t.”

“I’m pretty sure you have,” I counter. “You asked me to read a book for you. And even before that…” I motion to him. “Squirrely.”

“I’m notsquirrely.”

I laugh. “Whatever you say.”

He presses his lips together. He has the decency to look a little guilty, and after a minute, he blows out a breath. “I got served.”

My stare is probably blank. Because I don’t know what the fuck that means.

“With… papers.”

“Legal papers?”

He nods. He opens his phone and goes into his voicemails. Then to the deleted ones, which apparently don’t go away even after you delete them.

He hits play.

“Hey, Knox. It’s Aurora. It’s been a while… I need you to call me back. There’s some things we need to discuss. It’s kind of urgent.”
