“Shh.” I cup her cheek.

She blinks rapidly in the low light. She lets out a noise, somewhere between a whimper and sigh, and I move over her. I tug her shorts down. She hugs me to her, and I nudge her panties aside.

My cock is rock-hard and ready, and I easily slide into her.

It feels right like that. A weird sort of comfort I can’t explain—for both of us, I think. Because she relaxes, her fingers drifting up into my hair.

“You had a nightmare,” I say, kissing the corner of my mouth.

“Sorry.” She turns her head and kisses me better. Direct contact. She nips at my lower lip, bringing her legs up and locking her ankles around my back.

I love that she wants this as much as I do.

Still. “Don’t apologize.”

“I’m not.”

I smirk. “You just said sorry.”

She shrugs, meeting my eyes. “Well, now that this is happening, I’m not sorry. Now please fuck me like you mean it.”

She lifts her hips a bit, and I bite back my own groan of appreciation.

“What if I want to make love?”

She makes a face. Something cross.

“Songbird,” I say on a laugh.

“I love you, but I really need you to move faster.”

My heart stops. “You love me?”

“I dreamed about moving to Crown Point for the first time,” she whispers. “I spotted a man I’d later find out wasJacob Rhodessitting in my class and staring at me with pure awe on his face. I’d never seen anything quite like it. Even Henry never looked at me like that at the height of his… courtship. Maybe even then, I knew we’d do something crazy special together.”

“So…”

“Yeah, I do,” she says. “But not only that, I’m in love with you, Jacob Rhodes.”

MELODY

Ask anyone, and they’ll easily tell you that I don’t like hockey very much. Not the violence of it anyway. I like the speed. I like the way Jacob looks in his gear, decked out in blue and mint green and white.

Which is why I’m currently painting him.

Game six—and maybe the last game—against LA. The Titans have won three, LA two. Apparently, if Jacob’s team wins tonight, that means they move on to round three. If they lose, we’re heading back to LA for game seven.

The logistics and rules of the game make sense, too.

Jacob’s friends are in the suite with me, along with Lucy, Theo, Caleb, and Margo. Caleb said they came along so he could personally deliver the news that my parents will not be contacting me anymore. After a video conference hearing, a judge approved our case.

So that’s that.

Mom was arrested for killing Henry—although I have no idea if that will stick or not—and Dad was thrown in solitary confinement awaiting an arraignment on new charges. Seemed a bit conspicuous, but they both knew that Mom tried to kill me. Not once, but twice.

That fucks me up when I think about it too hard.
