“What about we make a clean break, then get patched?”

“After how long?” I ask.

Duke shifts his gaze to his feet, then slowly lifts his eyes to meet mine. “Six months. But we gotta have an income during that time.”

“Thoughts on that and how you’re going to make it happen?”

Silence falls over the room. I open my mouth, but I don’t have anything to fucking add to this, then I realize that maybe I do. I’ve had this idea rolling around but haven’t really told anyone yet. Maybe this is the exact moment when I need to say it.

“I’ve had an idea I’ve been wrestling with lately. I wasn’t sure if we were ready for it yet, so I haven’t mentioned it,” I start.

Everyone turns their focus on me as I clear my throat. It’s time for me to tell them what I’ve been wrestling with, an idea that will either make me look really smart or really fucking stupid. Sucking in a breath, I hold it for a moment, then I let it out.

“I thought we could dabble in real estate,” I announce. “Maybe even run a bar, too.”

“A bar I could see, but real estate?” Legacy asks.

I dip my chin in a single nod. “Real estate,” I confirm. “I bought the salon for Reese if she ever comes back, but Kiplyn is going to be using it for her shit. It got me thinking. That landlord downtown wants to sell everything. He’s ready to be done with it all and retire. Why don’t we buy what we can and rent it out?”

“What do your finances look like?” Legacy asks, turning to face Duke. “You said you’d need to make some money.”

Duke looks down at his feet, then lifts his gaze to meet mine. “We might be able to invest,” he mutters. “If there is a way to make some money out of it. A return. I think we could make that happen. I’d need numbers.”

“And a confirmation from us to go forward, I’m sure,” Legacy mutters.

“Naturally.”

Legacy lets out an exhale, then shakes his head once. “Okay, this is something I have to put up for a vote, then Agony will get some numbers since he’s dealt with this guy before, and after that, we’ll let you know. It could take a little while,” he warns.

“I’m good with that, as long as there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” Duke states.

“Is there more to this that we need to know?” Legacy asks.

Duke smirks, standing tall and taking a step backward. “Let’s just say I understand why you wanted to go legit after you got women and started a family. That hits home now.”

“You meet someone, or you starting a family?” I ask.

“Something like that,” Duke states.

He doesn’t say anything else. He turns and leaves the room and then the clubhouse. Legacy doesn’t leave the room, though. His attention shifts toward me, and his lips twitch into a small smile.

“Fuck me, Agony,” he says. “Is this really fucking happening?”

“Yeah, I think it really is.”

ChapterSeven

REESE

I’m sure that legally,I wasn’t supposed to work for twelve hours straight, but since I’m working for cash and tips, nobody can really regulate shit. Plus, I need all the money I can get. Therefore, instead of bitching about it, I’m happy to work the twelve hours, even though my feet are killing me by two in the morning.

Once the last person leaves the bar, Charley locks the front door, and I kick off my shoes. I’ve already counted my till, and now I’m going to help clean up, but I can’t be in high heels for one more minute.

I’m not required to help, but there is no way I can just leave. It wouldn’t be right. So, since I have nobody waiting for me and nothing to do, I can stay here and help clean up from the night.

Charley doesn’t say anything or tell me to leave as I start to pick up bottles and walk them to the trash. I take this as a silent confirmation and just keep working. The prospect behind the bar is busy washing dishes. We’re all doing our own thing. When I turn around to gather more bottles, I see a face in the front window.

Unable to control myself, I pinch my eyes closed and let out a bloodcurdling scream.
