“Fine,” Stoker grinds out. “You will be compensatedwell.”

Logan reappears, his gaze flicking to mine. “You,” he grinds out. “You still want my sister?”

I stare at him, blinking, then shift my gaze to Legacy before sliding it back to meet Logan’s. There is a moment of silence as we stare at one another, and I let out a grunt. “What the fuck are you talking about?” I snap.

“She called me for help. Her ex is stalking her. He found her again, and she needs a safe place to crash. She won’t tell me where she is, so I can’t send anyone to get her. I told her to meet me at the safe house, but if you want her and you can keep her safe…”

His words trail off, and my entire body jerks at his words. What the actual fuck is he talking about? I open my mouth to ask just that, but Logan snorts and speaks first. “Let me guess, she didn’t tell you about Douglas?”

“No the fuck she didn’t,” I growl.

“Well then, seems like me handing her over to you would be a good idea. You have a lot of talking to do. That is if you want her.”

Taking a step toward him, I dip my chin, my eyes catching and holding his. “She’s mine. And I’ll drop you a pin of where I want her to meet me.”

Logan’s lips curve into a grin. “Good,” he chuckles. “You can protect her?”

“With my goddamn life.”

“Good.”

ChapterThirteen

REESE

As I lockmy apartment door, I can’t help but wonder exactly where Douglas is right now. I know he’s close, I can feel it, and at the same time, I know, without a doubt, I can’t stop him.

Placing my hand on my belly, I curse myself for not fighting harder, for just calling my brother immediately, but I did that for this baby. I can’t let anything happen to my baby.

Grabbing my bag, I pack my things as quickly as I can, taking only essentials. I’ve done this about a million times, and I’m a professional, but there is something different about this time. It’s not just that I’m in Arizona again; it’s leaving Charley and Justin. It almost feels the way it did when I left Casa Grande, although that hurt much worse.

Shaking my head, I hitch my duffel bag over my shoulder, grab my purse with my free hand, and head out of the apartment. Glancing around the parking lot, I look for anything out of place and again am met with a bunch of stuff that doesn’t look quite right because of where I live.

I open the trunk, toss my bag inside, then make a point to check the back seat for anything, or anyone, before I slip into the front and start the engine. I continue to look around my surroundings as I head back to Casa Grande, to my brother’s safe house.

I don’t know what this means for me and my future, but I’m exhausted, and people are starting to get hurt, which is the exact opposite of what I wanted to happen. So, I have to leave and hope that Logan can work some kind of magic to protect me. Or at least that he’s willing to help.

In the past, he hasn’t been so willing, but then again, I haven’t been so open to his help either. I have someone else to worry about now, someone innocent in all of this. Of course, my friends and Agony would be innocent as well, but this life inside of me, it’s completely and totally blameless.

As I drive out of Phoenix, I check my rearview mirror over and over, and when I’m all alone on a desert road, that’s when I can breathe easier. Nobody is behind me. I snort to myself, wondering if I’ve done all of this out of pure haste.

Taking my phone out of my cup holder, I scroll through the contacts until I find Justin’s. I shouldn’t be calling him, but I need to know exactly who it was that came to him. Maybe I’m just being ridiculous and paranoid.

“Hello,” Justin slurs as his greeting.

He sounds completely and totally out of it, and I know that whoever beat him up did a good job of it. My heart squeezes. It’s not that I have any kind of romantic feelings for him, but he’s still my friend. He’s watched out for me, he’s helped me, and I don’t want to see him hurt in any way, especially if it has to do with me.

“Who did it?” I demand.

He doesn’t speak immediately; instead, he clears his throat and stays quiet. I can hear the television in the background and nothing else. Until he finally decides to talk to me. When he does, I know without a doubt that he’s lying.

“Girl I was out with. Her boyfriend.”

“Liar,” I exhale. “What did he look like?”

Silence greets me again.

“It doesn’t matter,” he grunts.
