Agony snorts. “The job,” he murmurs. “That’s all you care about.”

“Absolutely.”

There is a moment of silence, and I think that maybe Logan has left, but then I hear him speak. “Worry about your duty. The rest of the shit is just life. But the job, that is the most important part of this, of any of this.”

“Your priorities are fucked,” Agony states.

Footsteps move through the house, and I hear the front door open before Logan speaks again. “If you had any idea of the absolute shitstorm you just got yourself into with Reese, you’d be focused on the job, too.”

Then the door clicks closed, and I know my brother is gone. I stand against the wall for another breath, then two, before I hear a voice.

“Buttercup, you wanna come out from being plastered against the wall now?” Agony calls out.

I push away from the wall to slowly make my way into the small living room, but I don’t approach him. I don’t know what he’s thinking, if he’s regretting ever knowing my name or what, after speaking with Logan, so I stand where I am, waiting for the other shoe that is about to drop.

“What did you promise him?” I ask on a whisper.

Agony hums, but he doesn’t tell me. He tilts his head, his gaze focused on mine and not leaving as he speaks.

“Why does your brother feel so strongly about not wanting anything to do with you?”

Sinking my teeth into my bottom lip, I let out a heavy sigh. “I was a wild child. At least that’s what everyone thought,” I murmur.

I’m trying to get out of this conversation without saying too much because nobody needs to know every single detail of my childhood. It’s ugly and nasty. It’s nothing I ever want to think about, let alone actually say out loud.

“But the reality?” Agony asks.

“I was hurting just as much as Logan, but in a different way. He didn’t want to see it, still doesn’t, assumes I was a spoiled brat who got whatever she wanted. He wasn’t around much, but he truly had no idea what it was like for me, just like I can’t pretend to know what it was like for him.”

“And you’ve told him?” Agony states.

Nodding, I clear my throat. “More than once. He doesn’t want to listen, or maybe he truly does not care.”

Agony closes the distance between us, lifting his hand to cup my cheek with his palm and sliding his thumb across my bottom lip before his lips brush against mine. Then he speaks.

“Fuck him,” he rasps against my mouth. “This world is ours, buttercup. You, me, and our baby, the Devil’s Hellions, all of it. It’s ours. If he doesn’t want to participate, that’s on him. Nothing you can do about that. Let me take care of you always, Reese.”

As much as I want to tell himno, just out of pure concern for his safety, I don’t. I nod before I lean forward and touch my mouth to his.

“Okay, Lance.Okay.”

AGONY

Both Reese and Logan are keeping something about their childhoods a secret. It’s not my fucking business, though. My only business is that woman and to keep her safe. Everything else will come to light when it does. I already know more today than I did yesterday.

We don’t go back to bed, mainly because I’m too amped up to sleep. So instead, I instruct her to sit at the counter on one of the barstools while I make us breakfast. “What are you doing?” Reese asks.

Grabbing a carton of eggs from the fridge, I turn around and hold them up so she can see them before I answer. “Making breakfast.”

“Breakfast?” she asks.

My lips twitch into a small smile, and I dip my chin in a single nod, then shift to the counter. “Tell me about whatever it is you’re doing for my brother. I thought you were going legit, the whole club.”

“We are legit,” I reply as I start cracking eggs into a bowl. “But some shit went down, and we have to playnotlegit for a while.”

She doesn’t speak immediately, then I hear her hum. Ignoring her, I continue to crack eggs and then scramble them.

“Lance,” she calls out.
