Clearing my throat, I run my fingers through my hair as I shift my gaze across the room to meet his. He’s watching me, waiting for my response, but he already knows it. I can see it in his eyes.

“Yeah, I really fucking do. He’s having his cake and eating it, too. He’s working for the government, totally fucking protected, and making a fuckton of money as he traffics dope and women. Why else would this shit take this long?”

“And whatever he does, he’s going to pin it all on Dead Phoenix and walk away scot-free.”

“Exactly,” I grunt. “I got a bad feeling.”

Roadkill nods his head once, then he stands and wipes the grease onto his coveralls before he reaches for his phone. I don’t know what the fuck he’s doing, but I watch him, waiting.

“Legacy, come down to the shop. I got Agony here, and I think we need to have a meet.” He ends the call, then turns to face me. “You got a gut feeling, and we need to go with that. If nothing else, we need to be completely prepared for it.”

I do have a gut feeling. I got a gut feeling that we’re going to be goddamn fucked if we aren’t careful with this. I knew it the moment we started messing around with the Dead Phoenix, and now we’re trying to go legit and got sucked back into their vortex all over again. Fuck that. And fuck them.

Taking my phone out of my pocket, I call to check on Reese. She doesn’t answer, and my heart slams against my chest in a panic. Finding the prospect I know is working behind the bar today, I call him next.

“Is my woman there?” I demand as soon as he answers the phone.

He clears his throat. “Yeah, she’s sitting at a table with two babies and three old ladies.”

The women have been notified and mobilized. “Thanks.”

Ending the call, I shove my phone into the inside pocket of my cut and let out a chuckle. I’m glad the women have gone to her. I know she’s probably been worried about their reactions, but those are her girls, and she needs to tell them her story.

Reese has been keeping secrets from all of us for far too long. Now that it will be all out in the open, there won’t be a reason for her to run ever again. This is another reason why I want to know as much as fucking possible.

Legacy walks through the door and marches toward us. I almost laugh at the sight of him, but I don’t because I know it’s going to be the exact way I’m going to look in a few months. He looks frazzled and exhausted.

“Baby keep you up all night?” I ask.

He grunts but doesn’t answer me. Instead, his gaze flicks over Roadkill. “You wanted to see me?” he demands.

“We did,” Roadkill murmurs. “Actually, Agony has some insight, and I think we need to take that shit seriously because this is getting a little wacky, in my opinion.”

Legacy’s gaze flicks over to me, and he tilts his head, his lips pressing together in a thin line. I almost tell him, never mind, because it’s clear he’s seriously fucking annoyed today, but I don’t because I do have a bad feeling about this entire situation.

So, I tell him everything I saw today and everything I think is going to be a result of what I saw today. His frown becomes more prominent with each word I say, and his bad mood worsens.

“Fucking Dead Phoenix,” he growls. “Fucking hell. We need church. Now.”

ChapterTwenty-Three

REESE

With my story finished,Henli, Kiplyn, and Piper watch me, their lips parted as they stare, unmoving. Clearing my throat, I look down at my lap and then place my hand on my belly before I shift my gaze back up to meet theirs, flicking my attention between the three of them.

“So that’s my story,” I state.

Kiplyn sucks in a breath, then leans back in her chair as she lets out a sigh. “Holy shit, girl,” she murmurs. “I cannot believe you went through that for all those years alone and are still going through that.”

“I had my brother,” I mutter.

Piper snorts. “No, you didn’t. He’s an asshole. I’m sorry, but he’s shady as hell, and he hasn’t taken care of you or helped you at all. You haven’t had anyone. I know what that’s like. Don’t downplay it.”

She’s right. My brother didn’t even help me when I begged him. Granted, he did send Agony to me, but I have a feeling that was more about Agony and less about my brother. Sucking in a breath, I nod a couple of times.

“You’re right,” I whisper.

I know she is. My brother hasn’t been helpful at all, not in anything. He could have, but I’m not a priority. That much is clear.
