What I want to do is cry, but I don’t because whatever tears I might’ve had, they’re completely dried up now. Throwing my legs over the side of the bed, I place my feet down on the floor and stand up straight.

With a heaviness that I haven’t felt in years, I make my way toward the bathroom and take another good look at my reflection in the mirror. The bruises on my neck aren’t as purple. They’ve begun to fade. I’m not sure if I like or hate that.

This is why I’m fucked up.

I’m not sure if I love or hate thebruisesa man left on me. A man who I don’t even know.

Not truly anyway.

No matter how much I want to tell myself that he makes me feel a certain way, the truth is the truth, and I have to face reality. I don’t know him, and so far, I don’t think I could trust much about him. He’s already breaking promises.

Taking a quick shower, I decide to drown myself in work today. Tomorrow begins a new week, and hopefully, I’ll be busy enough that I won’t think about him. Then, as each day passes, I can try to forget this whole thing.

It’s clear that this was a fantasy for him. He got his kicks. He stalked and fucked a virgin. Maybe he knew that’s what I was. I’m not sure how long he’s been watching me, but maybe he’s been doing it for a while.

Chewing on my bottom lip, I gather my computer and phone and sink down in my leather chair. Instead of opening my computer immediately, I think about texting Allison. I’m not sure I want to tell her. I’m so overwhelmingly embarrassed with myself.

Finding her name in my contact list, I call her just as the door to my condo opens. “Hello?” she calls out as Wells steps through my door.

He’s wearing a pair of dark-washed jeans and a white T-shirt with sneakers on his feet and sunglasses on his face and is holding a little pink box in his hand. After he closes the door, he takes the sunglasses off his face, and his eyes find mine.

He looks exhausted.

“Parker? Are you okay?”

Allison’s voice shakes me from my thoughts. “I am. I’m sorry. Can I call you back?”

She hums as if she knows exactly what’s happening, then she lets out a heavy sigh before she speaks. “Yeah.”

I can’t take my eyes off him. He stays fairly far away from me, still standing across the room, and stares in silence. I don’t know what to do, let alone what to say. The expression he wears is one I couldn’t even attempt to guess at what he’s thinking.

Wells takes one step forward, then another. He gives me a smirk, and I swear my entire being melts at the sight of him. Every single negative thought vanishes immediately. I open my mouth to ask him where he’s been but snap my lips shut because it’s not my business, but then again, isn’t it just that?

“Work was rough last night,” he murmurs. “I didn’t even sleep. Just went home, showered, and came here,” he says, lifting his hand that holds the pink box. “Made a stop at the cupcake shop on the way.”

I feel like a total asshole now.

“Cupcake shop?” I ask.

He grins. “Cupcakes for my cupcake.”

“Work in real estate takes all night?” I ask, trying not to swoon at the cupcake comment.

He lets out a low chuckle as he kicks off his sneakers, then makes his way toward me. He sinks down in the corner of the sofa, his head slowly swinging over to me, his eyes finding mine again.

“Come over here, cupcake. Had a shit night. Need you.”

My heart stops.

WELLS

Parker hasn’t saidmuch to me, but I can tell she didn’t expect me to show up at her place this morning. Setting the pink box of cupcakes on the coffee table, I watch her. Her sofa is comfortable, but it would be a lot more comfortable if she were naked and straddling my lap.

It wasn’t a lie when I told her that I had a shit night. I did. After watching Shiloh leave the club, we followed her to another club, then we had to wait until that one closed before she left. At three in the morning, we followed her to a fucking trap house, where she bought some shit, then she got back into her car and drove to an empty park.

She knew we were following her, and she knew she was going to die. She took a hit of whatever the fuck she bought and OD’d. It was her last night, and she did what she wanted to make the most of it.

Then we had to clean it up.
