I’m lost.

I’m broken.

I’m not able to be fixed.

Ray should just end me for his justice.

A life for a life.

WELLS

Pulling up to the office,I’m not surprised to see Coleman’s car in his spot. Hendrick doesn’t even ask me to take him back to his place for his ride. He doesn’t need it. He’s going to dinner tonight, just like me.

Dinner with Mom, and I’m in the hot seat. I want to find a way out of it, but I know it’s inevitable. I wasn’t able to tell her about the engagement in a tactful way. How she found out was not how I had planned at all.

But it doesn’t matter anymore. It’s out in the open, and Dad is the one pushing it, so she won’t really say shit to me about my choice. She will, however, have some shit to say about me breaking into her office, something that I’m sure she’s figured out by now.

“That guy,” Hendrick begins.

“Was Parker’s ex-boss. He isn’t shit, and if he even thinks about her again, I’ll find out, and I’ll kill him.”

Hendrick chuckles. “I didn’t realize it was so serious with you. Allison told me she was a virgin and all. I figure she’s not now. But you’re really going to marry her?”

Hendrick and I don’t typically have somber conversations. I can tell he’s been thinking about this for a while. Shrugging a shoulder, I lean back in my seat. Lifting my eyes to the ceiling of the car, I let out a heavy sigh.

“It wasn’t serious until it became that way. Dad says that I have to marry her.”

“Yeah?” he asks. “Have to?”

Jerking my chin, I clear my throat. “Family shit,” I murmur.

He hums. His gaze straight ahead. “When do I get to be part of the trusted inner circle of the family?” he asks.

I think about his words. At his age, I was just becoming a manager. I have a feeling once Coleman gets married and moves up, he will, too, but I don’t tell him that. Instead, I reach out and pat his hand before I speak.

“Not everything that glitters is gold, brother.”

I open the car door, step out, and close it behind me. I can hear Hendrick moving as well. He doesn’t say anything else. The conversation is now dropped, and we head into the office. The Ray Randolph deal is supposed to close today, a text I received when I was leaving Eira’s office.

Walking into the building, we make our way over to the elevator banks. We step inside, and I stare at the numbers as they climb up to our floor. When we reach our floor and the elevator doors open, we step out, and I’m surprised to see Danica waiting for us with two cups of coffee, one in each hand.

“Coleman said you might need these for today,” she says brightly.

Arching a brow, I take one cup from her as Hendrick takes the other. This is out of character for her. Although she’s nice, Danica doesn’t usually do shit for me. She’s Coleman’s assistant, not mine. This makes me suspicious as fuck.

Shaking off the thoughts, I thank her, as does Hendrick, and she jerks her chin, turning as she begins to make her way toward the conference room, where I assume Coleman and maybe Dad are waiting for us.

My assumptions are correct. Danica doesn’t enter the conference room. She diverts and heads toward her desk. When we walk into the room, Dad and Coleman are bent over some papers, talking.

Jerking my chin, I take my seat and sink down onto the cushion as I lift the coffee to my lips. “Good morning,” Coleman mutters. “I’m surprised to see both of you up and moving so early.”

I don’t take offense at his words. I don’t like to wake up early if I don’t have to, and I know Hendrick doesn’t at all. Chuckling, I bring the cup to my lips again and take another sip.

“Wells had an offer that I couldn’t refuse this morning,” Hendrick quips, taking a drink from his own mug.

“Do I want to know?” Dad asks.

“Probably not. Now, why are we closing this right now?” I ask.
