I’m pregnant with Cole’s kid.

I also know, due to some frantic googling while I waited for the test to finish processing, that eating too much grapefruit can interfere with certain types of hormonal birth control.

They really should put that on the label.

Cole’s going to laugh when he hears that.

At least I hope he’ll laugh.

What if he doesn’t want this kid?

Because I do. I realize that as I’m staring down at the positive test. With the exception of moving to New York, I’ve always tried to do things in the sensible order.

Don’t leave a job, unless you have another one lined up.

Don’t start dating in a new city, until you’ve found a circle of friends who can cheer you on through the highs and lows and keep you from making dumb decisions.

Don’t move in with a guy unless you’ve been dating for at least a year.

Don’t think about kids until you’ve found the guy you want to have them with.

Well, it’s too late for those last two. I moved in with Cole before I started dating him. And we may not have talked about it, but Cole is exactly the guy I want to raise this baby with.

I blow out a shaky breath and realize I’m smiling. Everything with me and Cole is messy. But it’s a kind of messy that feelsright.

The bathroom door swings open, and Cole’s assistant Lucinda walks in.

She immediately spots the pregnancy test, and her eyebrows shoot up.

We both freeze.

“Don’t tell anyone,” I blurt.

“Of course not,” Lucinda says. And then, after a beat, she asks, “Do you need help, or congratulations?”

My heart swells. This woman barely knows me. But she’s offering her signature calm, efficient support, whatever I want to do with this pregnancy.

I take a deep breath. “Congratulations, I think.”

A smile blooms on Lucinda’s face. “How wonderful.”

I smile back at her.

She checks her watch. “Cole’s schedule is free for the next two hours. In case there’s something you might want to talk to him about.”

Oh my God, this is real. I’m pregnant, and I’m about to tell Cole.

I could wait, but what’s the point?

I want him to know. I want him to know everything. I want to take this messy, terrifying, glorious leap of faith, and hope he’s there to catch me on the other side.

I leave the bathroom and head to his office, feeling giddy.

Cole told me I could have more if I wanted it.

Maybe he was right after all.

I’mdown the hallway from Cole’s office, when I see Cole’s dad walk in and slam the door behind him. I draw closer and I can hear their voices, already raised and tense.
