Then Santa’s horrible, crooked, plastic face looms above me.

“You’re not a good girl, Lolly.”

Then nothing.

Ipromised my dad I wouldn’t see Evan again outside of school. But I did.

My dad was already gone for the day when Evan pulled up the next morning on his motorcycle. I was just heading out, the school an easy, mile-long walk, when he came rumbling up the drive.

My heart started to thud.

“Need a lift?” he asked pulling up. He had a second helmet strapped to the back of the bike. A Ducati, brand new, gleaming red and black. My father would absolutely blow a gasket if he knew; but I took the helmet from Evan, climbed on the back of the bike, and let him take me to school. I had never really defied my father before and I was surprised at how easily I did so, without guilt or regret.

Right there, with my arms around his waist and the engine thrumming between my legs, right there I realized that I liked boys—a lot. I had my sexual awakening on the back of Evan’s motorcycle.

All eyes were on us as we pulled into the lot that day. I remember watching the gape-jawed stares and laughing a little inside. Madeline, the super nerd, on the back of the new kid’s motorcycle.

We were climbing off the bike, my heart still thrumming when Steph, Sam, Ainsley, and Badger casually strolled up. Steph was looking especially hot in a tight red sweater and torn jeans.

“We’re Madeline’s friends,” she said, sticking out her hand. “Herbestfriends.”

“She told me all about you. You must be Steph.”

Funny. I never once mentioned them. There was that charm again.

“The hot one,” she said with a mischievous smile. Ainsley smacked her on the arm.

“Right,” said Evan, with a smirk. “And Ainsley, Sam, and Badger.”

I remembered how he knew my name and found my house. Later, I’d wonder, had he been studying us?

“I’m Evan, the new kid.” He kicked down the bike stand, and as I handed him my helmet, Steph snatched it away.

“Maybe I can get a ride sometime,” she said, before handing it to him.

“Maybe,” he said, taking the helmet from her and strapping it on the bike. “Sure.”

I wanted to punch her.

Ainsley started chattering about how their dad used to ride a motorcycle until their mom made him give it up.

“They’re dangerous,” said Sam, looking pointedly at me. Only Badger hung back, locking Evan in a dark stare, silent.

“All the good things are a little dangerous,” Evan said, earning a giggle from Steph.

“See you in chem,” Evan said to me, and walked off, disappearing into the crowd. Thanks for the ridestayed lodged in my stupid throat.

Ainsley pulled me back as we walked toward the school. “Your dad let you ride on Evan’s motorcycle?”

“Who says I told my dad?”

“O-M-G, Maddie. You’re arebel,” she said, gripping my arm, grinning.

“Maybe I can get a ride sometime,” I mimicked as we caught up to Steph, batting my eyelashes dramatically.

“What?” she said, mock innocent. “You don’tlikehim, right?”
