Then in my head, I added, “I need to wake up now. Morgan, wake up.” I said the last phrase as sharply as I could, willing my body to comply back in the waking world.

And then I was gone.

CHAPTER 24 - MORGAN

Ipulled my cloak tighteraround my shoulders as I followed my uncle’s directions and tread through the passageways that lined the interior of the ancient castle walls down to the dungeons.

Dawn was a few hours away. I had two visits to pay before then.

Lifting my lantern a little higher, I caught sight of a chalk drawing on the stone wall ahead.

Lancelet’s cell was indicated with an X. It was around the next bend.

As I turned the corner, it was as I’d suspected.

I wasn’t going to be able to get close to Lancelet, even if there were a lack of guards at this time of night. The passage I was coming through bordered the back wall of the row of cells. My only access point was through a small square in the stone where a piece of wood had been painted to blend in with the wall of the cell.

I stepped up to the wooden block and slid it to the side as quietly as I could, making certain to rest my lantern on the floor lest the light cast a gleam that gave me away to any guard passing by on the opposite side.

“Lancelet,” I whispered, softly at first.

I listened. The soft snoring of prisoners was all I could hear.

A pair of eyes popped into view, filling the square space in front of my face. I nearly yelped.

“Lancelet! You nearly scared me out of my skin.”

Her blue eyes flickered over me. “What are you doing here?”

“What do you think I’m doing?” So it was going to be like that again, was it? “My uncle said he left you some healing herbs. Did you get them?”

There was a slow blink. “I got them. They helped. Thank him for me. Now get out of here.”

“Stop trying to get rid of me. I just got here. I wanted to see if you were all right.”

“Well, you’ve seen. I’m fine. Now go.”
