I scowled. “What is it?”

Her expression sobered. “He loved you once. At least, so he swears. Since then, he has searched for you across time and realms.”

My heart began to hammer. “Why?”

Orcades gave a dry chuckle. “Why does anyone claim to love anyone else? So they can use them.”

“That’s a very cynical view of love,” I said gently.

“Is it? Well, know this at least, Little Sister. When my child and I destroy our father, it will save you from a far worse fate.”

I shook my head in frustration. “You truly plan to use this baby as some sort of a weapon? How is that possible? They haven’t even been born yet.”

She smiled cryptically. “What? You think I would become a mother out of the goodness of my heart?”

“That’s one reason I’ve been told people have babies.”

She gave me a look that said I was unbelievably naive. “And Arthur, do you think he’s bringing your younger brother back out of the goodness of his heart?”

“What do you mean?” I demanded.

She smiled thinly. “Be cautious, Morgan. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“A cryptic warning is no warning at all,” I protested.

There was a tentative knocking at the door.

“Send them away. Whoever it is. We have more to say to one another.”

But Orcades was already rising and gliding back to her harp. “Time for my music lesson. We can speak more at the tournament.”

I knew I had been dismissed.
