I ran my hand over his forearm, trying to calm him but knowing it was probably no use. “I know. I believe you. You know I do. But...”

I took a deep breath. “Even if something happens to me”—I had to tell him. He had to know. Nodori hadn’t had this luxury. But I did—“it won’t be your fault,” I blurted out. “It would be mine. I left you. I chose this. I know that. Anything that happens to me now is my responsibility, Draven. The choice was mine, and I made it.”

His face was as still as stone. His arm was like a rock under my hand.

“I need you to know that,” I finished.

He turned his head finally, his green eyes flecked with gold staring down into mine. My gold. His green. Even our bodies reflected one another now.

“Would you make the same choice again?”

I swallowed. “No. I wouldn’t. We should never have been apart. I know that now. I need you, but more than that... we’re stronger together.”

He nodded as if I had said something he had known for a very long time.

He leaned down and gently kissed my forehead. “Good. Move over.”

He came around the chair, scooped me up like I weighed no more than a rag doll, and settled me on top of him. I leaned my head against his chest, felt his head settle on top of mine, and let out a sigh of contentment.

“At least we’re here, together now,” I murmured.

He stroked my hair silently.

My eyes popped open. “What about what I saw in the library? Should I try to speak to Arthur about it?”

“I wouldn’t. You said Fenyx was there. I’m sure Arthur already knows. Or will soon. You need to stay on the sidelines as much as you can. He wouldn’t welcome the news coming from you, Morgan.”

No, he certainly wouldn’t.

“What about Orcades? Should I tell her? Warn her?”

“She might already be aware. Have you considered that?”

I was quiet for a moment. “She might. She might not.” I made my decision. “I’m going to tell her.”

“Very well. Just be careful.”

I nodded against his chest, then slipped a hand inside his tunic, feeling the warmth and solidity of his flesh, the feel of his muscles, tense and hard.

“With any luck,” he said softly, “I’ll be there within a week. With Nightclaw and Sunstrike by my side.”

“And then?”

“Kaye will be back by then, hopefully. You and I will take him with us to some place safe, somewhere outside the city. We’ll wait for our forces to arrive.”

Our. Such a simple word, but a thrill went through me as I heard it.

“We’ll surround Camelot, send word to Lyonesse and Tintagel, and negotiate a peace treaty between the kingdoms.” He paused his stroking of my hair. “Arthur will have to surrender. Unconditionally. Tintagel and Lyonesse will demand we give him up.”

Even kings could be executed when they had committed crimes against entire continents.

“Then we will.”

I felt him let out a breath of relief. “Good. You can’t shield him forever, Morgan.”

I felt offended. “I wouldn’t try to.”

“I know, but I think part of you secretly still wants to. Even after everything he’s done. Even after what you told me he did to the Lyonesse girl.”
