There, in a seat by the window, looking a little bored and much, much older than I remembered him...

CHAPTER 32 - MORGAN

“Kaye!”

I swooped towards him as he rose from his seat with a grin that was, thankfully, exactly as I remembered it.

“Morgan!”

I was used to looking down on my little brother and wrapping him in my arms.

But now we collided, my head hitting his. At twelve, he was nearly as tall as I was.

I stepped back to look at him, then shook my head in wonder. “You’ve grown so much.”

Kaye had sprouted like a sapling. Tall and slender, his light brown hair was just as shaggy as ever, falling around his face. Shyness wrapped around him as it always had, but there was still the same ceaseless curiosity in his soft, inquisitive, brown eyes. I felt a lump in my throat when I saw the familiar gentleness and warmth as he looked at me with a smile sweet as honey.

Yes, he had grown, and I was sure he had changed. But he was still my little brother.

I touched a hand to his cheek. “Oh, Kaye. How I’ve missed you.”

Behind us in the doorway, Tyre cleared his throat. “I’ll leave you two now, shall I? Warmest felicitations on your homecoming, Prince Kaye.” With a smile and nod, he was gone.

Kaye and I looked at each other.

“I don’t think I shall ever let you out of my sight again,” I said finally. “I don’t even want to let go of you.”

Kaye squeezed my hand gently. “I’ve missed you, too, Sister.”

“I’ve thought of you so often. I had the most terrible dreams about you, Kaye,” I said softly.

“Well, I’m here.” He stood up a little straighter. “I’m fine, as you can see.”

“How was it? The frontlines, I mean.”

His smile faded. “They weren’t pleasant. But compared to the soldiers, what I saw was nothing. One of the men, a captain, took a liking to me. He and his men helped make my days more bearable. Less boring.”
