And I could not fault them for it.

“Go in peace, lady,” murmured one as she swept a kiss onto my brow without a backwards glance at the man who had killed her.

“Tell my mother,” another begged. “Find her and let her have peace.”

The last was only a child. “Hold on,” he pleaded, his boyish voice soft. “Don’t give up. Don’t give in to him. Oh, please, hold on.”

“Kaye!” I cried, remembering. “Oh, Kaye. Wait for me. I’m coming.”

The boy smiled sadly and was gone.

One by one, they passed over me, through me, and out of me. Each one recognizing me and calling me by my true name.

“Only for you,” a few murmured. “We would grant no one else this gift, lady. Only for you. For the gift you brought us is eternal peace.”

Lady of night. Daughter of darkness. And then the last and most powerful of all.

The name I had first been given upon my creation.

No matter how I may have wished to, I could not shrug off the weight of their words.

“Ferrum deae,”they whispered, and I sensed them looking at Excalibur then back at me with reverence. “Ferrum deae.”

I passed out of darkness as they left me and back into the light where a man was whispering the only name I ever wanted to hear in the most cherished voice I had ever known.

“Morgan,” my mate whispered. “Return to me now.”

CHAPTER 38 - DRAVEN

The light faded fromthe eyes of every dead fae as Morgan’s body sank back to the floor and she drew a quavering breath.

I rushed to her, scooping her into my arms, breathing in the scent of her hair.

The smell of blood upon her reminded me of why we were here and my eyes went unbidden to the man on the wall who was watching us with undisguised loathing and anticipation.

My mate moved in my arms, a small moan escaping from her lips.
