Lyrastra nodded. “I want her. She’s a no-nonsense type, and I need that.”

“I’ll speak with her,” I promised. “I’m sure if I asked her, she’d be honored to serve the new Regent.”

“And just Regent,” Lyrastra clarified. “Not Queen Regent or any of that nonsense. I’m keeping the spot warm, I’m not keeping it.”

“You have your own life to lead, and I understand that,” I said, holding up my palms. “That said... If there’s anyone you would like beside you for companionship.”

I meant Laverna, of course.

Lyrastra tilted her head. “I’ll consider it. Thank you.”

CHAPTER 7 - MORGAN

Merlin was speaking, and I was trying to listen. But my entire body was humming, buzzing, bursting with distraction. I had been prepared for some... discomfort... at being separated from Draven. But I had expected it to have taken some time before the feeling became anything more than a slight nuisance.

This... This was something else entirely. Just now, when I had stepped away from the table to stretch my legs, I could have sworn I felt his fingers caressing the back of my neck. The phantom touch left me shivering with disquiet—and with stark need.

Then there were the whispers in my mind. Like a distant echo of someone else's thoughts. Not clear enough to put into words or ideas, but faint and unsettling. The barest sensation of his voice in my head, a distant echo.

And this was only the second day apart.

How much worse would it get?

I forced myself to focus on what Merlin was talking about. Not to think about Draven. His scent. His voice. His touch. The way he would turn over in bed at night and wrap his long legs around mine, then throw a heavy arm over my chest and pull me tightly against him until I could hardly breathe. Oddly, I’d enjoyed the sensation. Two bodies, intertwined. The beating of his heart as his chest pressed against my back. And then the inevitable. The swelling hardness against my ass as our close contact raised him to arousal even in his sleep. The sweet feel of his teeth as he nibbled on my skin, as the palm of his hand cupped my breast through my thin night dress...

“What you’re saying would be suicide.” Sir Ector’s voice broke through my reverie. “I won’t allow it. Absolutely not.”

“Shouldn’t it be Morgan’s decision?” This was Galahad, gentle but stubborn.

“Indeed.” Merlin, calm, patient as ever. “The choice is hers in the end.”

“The girl has been through enough...” Sir Ector sounded as if he were on the brink of losing his temper.

“The girl will decide for herself,” I said. “Thank you, Sir Ector. You have no idea how much I have missed you. I can always count on your protection, and for that, I am eternally grateful.” He looked gratified.

I looked around the table. “All of you.” I let my eyes linger purposely on Lancelet. “I am grateful for all of you.”
