He seems the type to always be calm and collected, which is why what he did was so out of character.

Or maybe it was inevitable. He can pretend to be in control—but no vampire exists without living with the risk of bloodlust.

I’ve never had to experience bloodlust, but after sharing it with my mates, I realize how similar we are. We are creatures of death. We live in darkness, no matter how much we seek out the light.

Adding a manifestation spirit’s curse into the mix is a recipe for disaster.

“I’m glad you spared his life,” I tell Jasper honestly, matching his gaze with my own. “Because he’s my mate and I would not have forgiven you had you taken him away from me.”

I might not have even survived it. As I’m coming to learn, our bonds transcend this plane. Whereas most deal with insanity when they lose their fated mate, I think my bonds would take it much further than simply breaking me.

If one of my mates moved into the afterlife, I would likely follow him or be torn apart while trying to. I don’t expect my vampires would go to the death plane. That is a place for witches.

They would go someplace else, somewhere darker.

And we’d never again see the light we so desperately seek.

Jasper’s dark eyes widen. “Do you not remember?” he asks again.

“I remember,” I immediately counter. “And I will talk to Kornelius and Zy about that, but for now, there’s something more pressing to address. I met a spirit in the death plane and she changes everything.”

“Is that so?” Zyran asks with a curious tone.

“It changes nothing,” Jasper snarls, making my skin prickle with irritation. “It changes nothing. He hurt you, Issy. You’re not safe here. Don’t you hear what I’m telling you? We need toleave.”

Fury rises in me. “Leave?” I snap, unable to move underneath his body, which is more of a cage now than a shield. His hips pin mine, and despite my anger, arousal lingers beneath the surface of my rage.

Because he’s my mate; he’s the first of the three. No matter what happens, I will always want him.

But it doesn’t mean I can’t be pissed off when he’s not listening to me.

“And go where?” I continue, grazing my nose against his. I realize that more skin contact is easing the blinding pain across my side, giving me the strength to oppose him. “The Houses want me dead. The syndicates will, too, if they learn I’m here. Don’t even get me started on the enemies lurking in the Outcast Coven.”

“Like Royce,” he snarls. “We don’t even know where he is because Kornelius was supposed to be tracking him. I’ve been following Zane—our father, who also wants to rip into you—and I only came back when I was sure he was down for a few days. This is the time to move, Issy. This is—”

“No,” I say. The word is a whisper, but my magic is behind it, making Jasper and the other vampires in the room flinch. “Overriding me when I’m trying to talk is a good way to get on my bad side, Jas. Now, are you going to listen, or are you going to be an asshole?”

He frowns at me but finally backs off.

The cold that seeps in to fill the void between our bodies makes me shiver, but I ignore it.

They need to know my plan.

Still, I slip my fingers through his, needing his touch. It’s not only because I need him, but also because it is giving me strength.

“I’m going to contact my sister and convince Amala to come to us early. She’s going to heal me, and then we’re going to face our problems instead of hiding from them.”

“Problems like Royce and Zane?” Zy asks.

I can’t nod, so I purse my lips. “Yes, and when they’re gone, Daithi will be next.”

“How will we manage that?” Jasper asks, now from his position at the end of the bed, still close enough to keep hold of my hand. I haven’t told him that his touch helps me, but he seems to already sense it.

He’s still between me and Kornelius, but at least he’s not towering over me. “If it were as easy as killing them, I would have delivered their heads to you on a platter, witchling. We need Zane for his phasing ability. That’s how Kornelius was able to kill five hundred people at once—by phasing bombs into them without them even being aware of it.”

“That’s changed,” Zy says. “Issy was able to activate Kor’s teleporting ability without death. We don’t need him anymore for our plan to go after Daithi to work.”

Jasper raises a brow, but a new look has entered his gaze.
