What about Royce?she asks.

A grin stretches across my face even though I didn’t command my body to make the gesture.Don’t worry. He’s coming, too.

Chapter41

Jasper

Zane’s walking out in the open, in the middle of the day, and it’s confusing the shit out of me.

Any news?I ask Zy.

There’s no response, of course, because he’s still walling me out like a dick.

It figures that the moment I obtain the skill to telepathically communicate with my brothers—brothers I had thought were long dead—they shut me out.

The last thing I heard from Zy was some lewd competition shit regarding our mate. Which could have been fun if we weren’t in the middle of a life-or-death plan.

And now Zane is testing my stealth as he wanders past windows and earns looks from Outcast Coven members.

Some of them are likely matriarchs, and he ignores one when she tries to stop him.

“Vampire!” she snarls, tossing a magic rope at him like he’s some loose bull in a herd of wildflowers. “You’re coming with me!”

Zane phases straight through the restraint and keeps on going. “That’s no way to treat one of your own. Mind your manners.” He sends the rope phasing back at her, wrapping around her neck and choking her until she blacks out.

Zane keeps walking as if nothing of significance happened.

One of your own?I think. That’s an odd thing for a vampire to say to a witch.

Something big is going down. My father wouldn’t reveal his presence to the Outcast Coven unless he was untouchable.

Or was about to be.

What are you up to?I wonder as I stick to the minor shadows offered by one of the buildings. I stop at a crosswalk and patiently watch as he heads down a back road.

The direction where we’ve hidden Issy.

Zane is supposed to make his way there, eventually, but not until I receive the signal from Kor or Zy and lure him with her scent. I have a piece of her dress in my pocket in a zipped plastic bag. He can’t smell it, and I’m not actively guiding him, so he shouldn’t know where to go.

Yet, as I follow him through winding streets, it becomes apparent he knows precisely where Issy is holed up.

It’s too early. No one has given me the signal that Royce is in place. The timing has to be perfect.

Royce has to find Issy, and then Zane needs to come in shortly after that. Not too long that Royce has a chance to go after our mate, and he certainly can’t run into Royce before he sees Issy or it won’t look so damning.

Royce is supposed to believe that Zane found Issy first and destroyed any chance for her to be suited for the living patriarchs as a mate. She will look half-dead, thanks to a little spell, and that has a short timeline for us to work with.

I’m about to stop him myself when I spot Kornelius waiting on the front steps of the run-down mansion where Issy is waiting inside.

What the hell?

Kornelius smirks when he sees Zane. “Took you long enough, old vamp.”

Zane slaps Kor on the shoulder as if they’re old friends. “It’s my last day as a vampire. Has me a bit nostalgic, is all.”

Last day as a vampire?

Kor chuckles and opens the door.
