Issy?my sister says again, this time more urgent.Do I need to arrange a portal spell? Nolan can be there in less than—

Fallon, I’m fine, really,I assure her. I know I’m going to have to give her something or she’s just going to make this worse.I just… my ex-date is here and he’s mad that I stole a book.

Fallon goes silent in my head while I sort through the potion shelf Ayla set up. She usually leaves the “book learning,” as she calls it, to me and likes to experiment with the potion recipes I give her.

I circle my fingers around a bottle with purple liquid when Fallon finds her voice, drowning out the screams that would normally follow.I’m not sure what shocks me more. That you went on a date, or that you didn’t ask me for money.Again.

I snort as I place my new book in a glass box. It’s temperature-controlled and designed to keep ancient texts in prime condition. A few hours drying out and I suspect I’ll be able to open it without damaging it.

Ayla suggested that I get out more,I say, wrinkling my nose at the idea.

In my opinion, I’ve beengetting outplenty. After a lifetime of being imprisoned in my family’s basement, I’ve been wandering the forest, learning about the types of flowers that grow here, and I even took up gardening.

I much prefer an isolated hobby after a lifetime of seclusion. Maybe I’m damaged. Maybe I’m traumatized.

Or maybe I just don’t like people.

Regardless, after a lifetime of being too dangerous to be around others, I’m used to being by myself. My nerves can hardly take too much social interaction, although Ayla doesn’t bother me. I quite enjoy her company.

My new hobby is something that she benefits from, too. I learned how to grow some of the rarer flowers for her potions and I’m particularly proud of my Middlemist Reds. They remind me of my favorite flower, the rose.

And my favorite thing about gardening is that it’s free from death screams. Nature and flowers are the essence of life, untouched by lost souls.

However, the screams still find a way to reach me the moment I touch something that’s man-made. My own cottage has generations of screams within it, some of them from the Great Sacrifice.

Even here, I can’t escape.

I need a spell to silence them once and for all, for my own sanity.

I can’t keep relying on Fallon. I’m not the only person in her life anymore.

And I refuse to be a burden.

So, when Ayla mentioned Lapland’s spell book curator as my test subject, my head somehow bobbed up and down in agreement.

Because books are my weakness, and Ayla knows it.

And what excuse do you have for turning tothieveryinstead of asking your twin for some blood vials? Hmm?

A grin purses at my lips.Would your mates approve of you abusing your position just to buy your sister some old books?

She returns my earlier snort with one of her own. She somehow manages to make the sound come off more regal than mine.Knowing you, it’s a rare book, one worth at least a vial of the blood from Kaspian himself. Which I can get you, you know. If you’d justask.

Walking around with a vial of king’s blood sounds like a terrible idea, but I don’t say as much to my sister. She’s just trying to look out for me.

Well, I don’t need to ask because I got this. I’m just borrowing the book, anyway. And I’m going to use a memory potion on him. So don’t worry about me, okay?I ask my sister. Then I add,I expect you’re busy anyhow. Tell me I’m wrong.

One of my sister’s giggles is music to my ears, and proof that I’m right. Because that giggle came from one of her mates trying to get her attention. She’s probably in bed with one or more of them.

That’s what I thought. You have many duties as queen. One of the most pressing seems to be beating the record for most orgasms in a day.

Hey!she shouts, but there is a grin to her words.Don’t tell that to Nox or Bane. They’ll make it their life mission to fabricate some ridiculous number and then half kill me to meet it.

I can practically see her dirty-blonde locks bouncing around her face as her eyes glitter with happiness.

Her phantoms are definitely my favorite of her mates.

She managed a brief visit once with her phantoms as her protectors, and her happiness had kept me going when my nightmares threatened to take me under. I loved how Nox and Bane hung on her every word and clearly adored her.
