“Issy!” she screams, but I stop her with a mental command.

Leave,I order her, digging the blade in hard enough to draw blood.Or I swear to the spirits, I will protect you the only way I know how. I can do that with my voice… or I can scream from the death plane. The choice is yours.

My sister is furious—and terrified. Her eyes flick back and forth between mine, as though she’s desperate for another option.

I’m not going to give her one.

The ground rumbles as if to accentuate my threat. There isn’t much time.

Nolan carefully wraps his fingers around Fallon’s wrist. “You’ll tell her when we can return?” he asks me.

I nod, ignoring the pinch of the blade against my skin.

Jasper’s hand weighs on my hip as he chuckles in approval.

It proves to me that Daithi believes he can control me no matter if I’m alive or dead.

That gives me an idea, one that is unraveling in the background of my mind while my sister is slowly backing away.

“Please, Issy.Pleasedon’t do this,” she begs.

My heart twists with her pain, but I’m doing this for her. For us.

For me.

I’ll see you soon,I promise.

I just hope that the next time I see her, it’ll be through my own eyes and not through the veil of the death plane.

“See you soon,” she vows, then ducks her chin as Nolan leads her through the portal.

“Alone at last,”Daithi says, his breath hot against my neck.

My voice won’t hurt him, but that’s because he’s inside Jasper’s body. The logical conclusion is that I need to get him out for my voice to impact him.

I only have one shot at this.

Whirling, I slice Jasper’s throat open. He throws his hands over his open wound and gags.

It’s not enough to kill a vampire, but it’s enough to unseat the patriarch inside his body.

The spirit within him fluctuates and spills out on the waves of blood.

I don’t hesitate. I draw in a deep breath… andscream.

Chapter12

Kornelius

A few minutes earlier…

I’m familiar with death, but I’ve never quite experienced it so up close and personal.

I’m overwhelmed with a massive migraine, leaving me dazed as I try to gain my bearings.

My world is horizontal as my cheek is pressed against the ground. Across from me, a body twitches as blood spills out of a male’s open mouth. The fur sprouting all across his skin suggests he’s some sort of shifter, but he wasn’t fast enough against the unseen force that ripped through this place to transform completely.

Not that it would have done him any good.
