Remembering that Daithi summoned numerous dead bodies, I glance at the bedroom window. A strange silvery film resonated around it, suggesting that a spell is keeping us protected.

For now.

“How long is that going to last?” I ask, gesturing to the glass.

She eyes an hourglass on the nightstand. Only a trickle of sand has settled on the bottom.

“A few hours at most,” she says. A shadow passes over the window, but I can’t hear anything on the other side.

Her shoulders tense. “There’s an entire army out there.”

Sitting up, I blow out a breath. “Well, I guess you’d better let your sister know that she can come pick you up.” I don’t include myself in that statement. Kaspian’s queen would give her sister refuge—but not me. There’s no way. And even if it were an option, I’d be stuck in some prison cell where I’d never see the light of day.

I couldn’t be killed, or that would kill Ishara.

But I could be contained.Secured.

Ishara frowns and her cute brows pinch together. “I think it should be obvious I’m not leaving you. My sister would do anything to protect me, but she’d find a way to break the bond between us. After what Daithi just did to you, she’s going to think you’re too dangerous to keep around.”

I tilt my head. “Yes, I was thinking the same thing, but she’ll protect you.”

She purses her lips. “And what do you intend to do? When the hourglass runs out, this place is going to be overrun.”

“I’m not the one Daithi wants dead. I’ll be fine.”

She fists the bedsheets I’m lying on. “I had to bleed you out to dislodge his spirit from your body. I had to scream and use your magic as an amplifier to shove him back to the death plane, but it’s not a permanent solution. Hewillbe back and I doubt the technique is going to work a second time if he manages to possess you again.”

Another shadow passes over the window, sending the room into darkness.

I prefer the darkness. It allows me to see details better—details like Ishara’s silver eyes that shine bright with magic and ferocity.

She’s clearly been through difficulties in her life, but she’s come out stronger for it.

“You’re the perfect mate for me,” I say, easily changing the subject as I graze my fingers over her plump lips. I’ve been touching her arm this whole time, but if we’re going to be here for a few hours, I want to give her a proper goodbye.

I doubt I’ll ever see her again.

Because if Daithi does surpass my defenses once more, I’m taking him down with me. Ifeltwhat he wanted to do to Ishara Doyle, and I am self-destructive enough to make sure he never succeeds.

Even if it means I shred my body myself.

I press my mouth against hers, delighting when she parts her lips for me. My tongue tastes her fiery spirit and I enjoy it when she tastes me back.

“Your distraction tactics aren’t going to work,” she whispers against my mouth.

“Really? Seems to be working to me,” I say as I pull her onto my lap.

It’s not just a distraction tactic, though. The bond I have with Ishara Doyle gave Daithi an in, but it also helped us bring out each other’s true power.

Her voice is death incarnate, but with my power, it is something so much more.

I want to give her every chance in the world to fight for herself.

I would give her everything I have to offer, because fate showed me my mate. This is perhaps everything I have been building toward.

All for her.

I know it’s fate magic securing itself like hooks inside my body, making me convinced about my feelings, but that’s an aspect of our world that I accept. There is enough cruelty, enough suffering.
