As far as numbers go, we have strength, but we number four.

Not a very large digit.

“I don’t get it,” I growl, not liking how cornered I’m feeling. “Why bring her here, then? How is this better than keeping her in Gold and Garnet territory? At least then her sister might be able to take her in.”

Kor narrows his gaze. “That would likely result in the Houses going to war, and our world can’t take a full-blown battle between the Houses like that. King Kaspian is a protective ruler, and if our witch is Fallon’s sister, he’s not going to give her up. The Houses aren’t going to allow a witch that powerful to live, not now that they know about her.”

“I don’t want a war, either,” I snap back. “But you’re not the ones in charge here. What’ll happen to her when Royce comes tomorrow and finds out we don’t have the death stone? What happens when ourfathersees her?”

If he finds out we’re mated to the witch, then he’ll fully exploit that.

He’ll probably take her for himself just to prove a fucking point.

Kor rests a hand on my shoulder until I realize I’m growling.

His touch does something strange to me. When we were children, we had a strong connection. More like a magical connection, one that allowed me to feel the intentions from my brothers.

Kor’s intentions are pure. Everything he’s said is true and his feelings for our witch are roiling inside of him like a storm.

He’s very good at hiding it, but he can’t hide it from me.

Not when we’re bound by blood and magic.

He doesn’t continue until I’ve settled. “I know this is a lot to take in, Jas, but you’re going to have to remember how to trust me again. Zy and I have been working out this plan for years. When Daithi made his move, we were going to make ours. Nothing’s changed in that regard.”

“Everything’s changed,” I growl. “Did your plan include protecting Ishara Doyle?”

“No, but it can be adapted to do so. The Houses might pose a threat to Ishara, but they will target any creature with too much magic that upsets the balance.”

“Creatures like Daithi,” Zy points out. “I don’t think coming back from the dead is going to be looked at very kindly. We just have to show them what he’s capable of and they’ll pivot.” He shrugs. “Two birds, one stone, and all that.”

Kor nods. “Trust us to keep to the plan. It’s already in motion. Gold and Garnet will catch wind of this attack and blame another House, maybe even the syndicates. It’ll cause the distraction we need to buy us time.”

“Time for what?” I snap.

“For the next stage of the plan,” Zy says. “All of this hinges on placing the blame on Daithi. He’s fucking that up by putting it all on Ishara, but that’s okay. We have a witch who can help us prove her innocence.”

“I’ve already called her,” Kor says. “Amala will be here in two weeks. She says she’s going to wait for the heat to die down, and I don’t blame her for that. She’s exiled by the Outcast Coven and is taking a risk by even coming here. We just have to keep up appearances until we can prove Ishara isn’t a threat.”

“How is some witch going to help anything?” I say. “Isharaisa threat. Her screamdidkill people.”

“Amala has already said she can help with that,” Kor responds.

I raise a brow. “This sounds like you already knew about Ishara.”

“We didn’t,” Zy says. “But Amala must have known. She’s the one who reached out to us, originally.”

“And you trust this witch?”

“We do,” Kor says. “She wants the matriarchs to win. After the latest upheaval with Fallon, they’re on the winning team, but they’re disorganized. Amala has taken an interest in anyone fighting the patriarchs, and when she discovered we weren’t here of our free will, she offered her support where she could.”

“She’ll want to expose Daithi,” Zy says as he rubs the growing stubble on his chin. “As long as that remains our directive, she’ll help us.”

It’s a sound plan, but it still doesn’t assure me of Issy’s safety.

“Fine. We can play along with your plan, but Ishara cannot be here tomorrow.”

“Agreed,” Kor says. “That’s why Zy’s going to take her to his townhome.”
