“Avoid them?” Hakon’s inner wolf howled. “No. I’m ripping their Ancients’ damned heads off.”

Chapter Seven

Luc

After digging themselvesout of their cave, Luc and the other trackers in his squad emerged on top of a snowbank, overlooking the barren tundra that had been blanketed with a new layer of snow. His thick fur coat gave him protection from the frost as he blew out a heavy breath, fogging the stagnant air. A breeze tickled his snout, and that’s when he caught the scent of his brother’s blood.

Ears flattening against his skull, he let out a whimper.Drasko? His brother should be in their home near Fairbanks by now. How was he still able to scent him?

And then he caught scent of his mate, and he about lost his mind. They should’ve been home, but their scent was coming from somewhere northeast of Nome. Something was wrong. Something wasverywrong.

Nyx, the forward observer, sidled up to Luc with a whimper. The dark comms collar around his neck blended in well with his black fur. Only a few wolves wore comms collars, as they didn’t want to risk their enemies noticing a bunch of wolves with radio equipment. The forward observer usually directed artillery fire support onto the target, but he was also in charge of communication to the base camp.

Luc froze when he heard Agent Johnson’s voice on the other end calling out the coordinates of an Army helicopter that had been shot down by enemy fire. His mate and brother’s helicopter!

He let out an agonized howl, and then he was off, racing across the tundra, the other trackers following close behind. He prayed Drasko had been able to protect their mate and find shelter. He feared the worst, for even if they’d survived the crash and enemy fire, there was no way Amara could survive the elements in her human body.

Amara

The first thing Amaranoticed when she woke was the wind had stopped howling. Sunlight streamed in from the tattered curtains, and she sat up, shocked to see the snow piled halfway up the window. Drasko wasn’t in the cabin, but she heard a grunting noise outside and a rattling on the outside door. What was he doing? She wrapped a blanket around her bare shoulders and slipped off the bed, wincing when the floor’s chill seeped into her feet. She opened the front door in time to see Drasko in his protector form shoveling snow away from the opening with his bare hands.

“Drasko,” she pleaded, holding out her hands. “Come inside.”

I will after I’ve collected more firewood and water,he answered through thought.

She realized they still had to mind-speak, which meant danger was still out there, lurking. She swallowed back a lump of fear while clutching her blanket tight.

Don’t go.Her plea sounded strained, even though she spoke to him through thought. She didn’t want him to leave. What if the Russians found them?

He finished knocking away the last of the snow and slid down the embankment with a lopsided grin.I’ll only be gone a few minutes. He kissed the top of her head.No matter what, don’t leave.

She shook her head, unable to see past the white wall in front of the door.Where would I go?She knew she wouldn’t last long out in the Alaskan wilderness in her human form.

Nowhere. He rested his big hands on her shoulders, his long fingers pressing into her spine. We’re staying put in this cabin until Luc finds us.
