She placed her hand over his. “He showed me where to find Drasko after he’d been attacked by a polar bear.”

He sat back on his heels, absorbing all she’d told him. “We saw the dead bear on the way in.” He let out a low whistle. “Our son’s going to make one hell of a tracker.”

“Luc.” She squeezed his hand, her words coming out on a plea. “I had this vision for a reason. Your brothers need you.”

He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. “I don’t want to leave you.” Not after almost losing her and the baby. How could she expect him to leave her now?

“Luc.” Her voice rose and cracked. “Please.”

He shot to his feet again, pacing the floor. A thousand different fears swirled in his mind, making his chest heave with panic. What if the Russians circled around and came back? Or what if Amara was caught in another storm or another bear found her? But what if the Russians killed his brothers and he could’ve stopped them? Nyx said their squad would protect Amara with their lives. He trusted his squad, his second family. They were the best trackers among the Amaroki, which was why Luc had picked them to be on his squad, and they had never let him down before.

Releasing a pent-up breath, he faced his mate. “I’m leaving my best team of trackers to protect you. Don’t leave this cabin for any reason. Do you understand?”

She held out her hands in a gesture of surrender. “I can’t shift, Luc. Where will I go?”

Reaching her in a few long strides, he sat beside her, clasping her shoulders. “I love you.” His voice cracked and then broke as he desperately searched her eyes. He’d almost lost her and their unborn child. He didn’t know if he could withstand the crushing grief again of not knowing if his mate and child were alive.

“I love you.” She cupped his cheek, a soft smile tugging at her lips. “Return to me and bring your brothers home.”

Closing his eyes, a growl rose up from his throat as he leaned into her touch. Then he took her in his arms and kissed her, desperately, as if this could be their last moment together. He prayed to the Ancients to protect his family once more as he tried to free his brother from their enemies.

Chapter Ten

Hakon

After catching thescent of their brother and following the sound of snowmobiles, Hakon and Rone circled the abandoned church in their wolf forms. Though Hakon wasn’t as good of a tracker as Luc, he had known to come to this forest with the massive thermal pond, the steam rising up from the water a sharp contrast to the snow that blanketed every branch in the surrounding dense forest. He didn’t know how he’d known to come here. Call it instinct. Call it luck. Either way, all that mattered was that they rescued their mate and brother.

The evening sun had already made its quick descent across the horizon, but with his wolf-touched eyes, Hakon easily adjusted to the darkness and could see his breath fogging the frigid air.

He heard voices coming from inside the church and recognized the word ‘volk’ which was Russian for wolf. He searched for any signs of Amara, panic pumping ore through his veins when he couldn’t scent her.

They have Drasko,Rone’s voice echoed in his mind.

He looked over at his wolf brother, his ears flattening against his skull.I know.

Rone let out a keening whimper. Why don’t I smell Amara?
