Hakon swallowed as he turned his attention toward the shadows moving behind the church’s stained windows. She’s not here.He tried not to think about what that meant. His mate had to be alive. He wouldn’t accept any other possibility.

Rone’s whimper was a blade slicing through his heart.Could she be dead?

We can’t think on that right now, Rone. We have to free Drasko. He’ll tell us where Amara is hiding.Shecouldn’tbe dead.

Rone’s whimper intensified. Why would they have him and not her?

Enough! He snarled at his brother. We have to come up with a plan.

I’m going to rip out their throats.Rone kicked the snow beneath his paw like a bull preparing to charge. That’s my plan.

Rone, you’re not thinking clearly,Hakon snapped. If they can disable a protector, they can disable you.

She’s dead, Hakon.Rone’s panic radiated off him in strong pulses. They killed her. She had no way to defend herself because she can’t shift.

Hakon growled a warning.Drasko wouldn’t let that happen.

Rone’s golden eyes narrowed.Drasko is their prisoner!

Luc and the other trackers might have her.Hakon did his best to sound convincing, though he wasn’t sure if he needed to convince Rone or himself.

Then how did they let the Russians take Drasko?

He had a point, but Hakon still refused to acknowledge it. She couldn’t be dead. He wouldn’t allow it, and if the Ancients tried to take her from them, he’d march into Valhol and take her back. Finally, he expelled a breath of air, his shoulders slumping.I don’t know.

They killed her! They killed our mate!Rone threw back his head and let out a mournful howl.

Rone, calm down,Hakon snapped, but it was too late. The shadows behind the windows scurried about and their voices rose to a feverish pitch. He swore. Now they know we’re here!

I don’t care.Rone snarled.I’m killing all of them!

Before Hakon could stop his brother, Rone raced for the church.

Tor

Tor paced the floorof his sons’ cabin, frustration gnawing a hole in his skull. He regretted not going with his sons, but they were younger and faster, and he hadn’t wanted to slow them down. But that was before he knew about the Russians. Word from Johnson had just come in that Amara was safe, but now Drasko had been taken captive by Russian spies. He could throttle Johnson for not telling him about the Russians in the first place. This changed everything and jeopardized not just the safety of his family, but all Amaroki.

Mihaela sat on the sofa, chewing her nails, her eyes bloodshot from crying. Skoll, Van, and Arvid did their best to comfort her, but she would be inconsolable until all her sons and their mate came back home.Ifthey all came back home. The babies had already been put to bed after Cyan Cloudclimber had fed Alexi. Annie and Tatiana were playing games downstairs, unaware of the severity of the situation.

His phone buzzed, and he pulled it out of his pocket, cursing when Boris Lupescu’s name flashed on the screen. There was only one reason Amara’s alpha father would call him—the Cloudclimbers couldn’t keep a fucking secret.

Mihaela and his brothers perked up when the phone buzzed again.

“Johnson?” Skoll mouthed.

Tor shook his head before answering the phone. “Boris.”

“Where is our daughter?” Boris snapped. “We’ve heard rumors her helicopter crashed.”

Damn those Cloudclimbers. “She is safe.”

“Where is she?”

“Luc found her,” he answered, doing his best to summon a confidence he didn’t feel. “She should be home soon.”

“What about Drasko?”
