“So maybe I reacted appropriately.”

“You’re okay, though?”

I gaze at the ceiling. I have dealt with this topic of conversation through blatant lies since I was fourteen years old. I didn’t expect for it to get harder.

“I’m fine. I mean it.”

There’s rustling, like she’s pulling the covers tight. “You’re going to come back tomorrow, though, aren’t you?”

“Course I am. I have work in four and a half hours.” This is the lie that hurts. I won’t show up to my shiny new job tomorrow. I probably won’t show up to it ever again. “Don’t worry.”

“There’s that stuff happening, though.” Remy’s about to fall asleep. My heart stops.

“What stuff?”

“That massive thunderstorm. It’s supposed to hit tomorrow night. You shouldn’t drive in it. Come home before it gets dark, okay?”

“I’ll do my best.”

“’K. Love you.”

“Love you, Rem.”

Wow. The universe knew I was faltering, then. There’s my reminder that I’m not waffling about ruining the judge and his granddaughter.

This isn’t only about me.

The shower shuts off, and my cock perks back up like I’d never sent Lily out of the room. She appears a minute later, wrapped in one of my blue towels. I stop myself from smiling at her.

“Drop the towel.”

Lily does, defiance returning to the tilt of her chin, and walks naked across the living room like a queen. She sits gracefully in the window seat, crosses one leg over the other, and folds her hands on her knee.

Icannotwipe the smile off my face. It’s a genuine struggle. Holy fuck, I can’t stop. I’m going to laugh, and I won’t stop.

Lily doesn’t smile.

Her face stays calm, mask on, like she really is royalty. Her hair hangs in finger-combed waves, drying slowly, and the shower pinked up her cheeks.

Beautiful,a voice comments in my head.

It’s my voice. Like I need my own voice to tell me what I think.

Fuck it. I let the grin stay on. She doesn’t know what it means, and her eyes narrow. She’s trying to figure it out.

“Well?” Lily sweeps a hand through the air, palm up.

“Stay where you are.” I throw a glance over my shoulder. “If you run, I’ll catch you, and I’ll tie you to the furniture.”

“Understood.”

I go into the bedroom.Mybedroom. I’ve spent no more than ten hours in the bed in the five years I’ve owned this place. A box in the closet has what I need to take this to the next level. The vibrator is still in its velvet carrying bag.

I let it dangle from my fingertips and go back to the living room.

Lily’s not sitting up anymore.

She’s curled up on the window seat cushion, one hand under her face, fast asleep.
