It’s not fear. It can’t be fear. I won’t let it.

“Has this ever happened before?”

Zeus’s struggle to regain control is palpable over the phone. It feels like a cocktail party that can’t hold its shape.

“Yes.”

“To her?”

“No.”

To his brother, then. “I have to be sure. Promise me it’ll work.”

It’s a ridiculous, childish thing to ask for. It’s the kind of thing you ask your dad for. I hate myself for asking.

“I promise, Hercules, it’ll work.”

I hate myself even more for believing him.

“Okay.”

“We’ll be here when you get home.”

For the first four hours,Daisy’s out cold. The first time she wakes up, her eyes get huge.

“Why are we on the plane?”

“Our second bad thing. A guy shot at your house. We weren’t waiting around for the third thing to happen.”

Her eyes get bigger. “How’d they get close enough to shoot at the house?”

“I mean, first, bullets can travel a long distance. Second, they drove a speedboat onto the beach.”

“Did Shane get him?”

“Not as far as I know.”

“Hmm.” She purses her lips. My adrenaline has faded enough that I’m ready to argue against whatever she says next. ThatShane alwaysoris Shane okay?orwhy didn’t you go after him?“Whatever,” she says, and goes back to sleep.

I check the app while she’s resting. The blue wave is below the red line, but it looks restless. Not normal.

I fucking hate that.

The next time Daisy wakes up, she frowns at the plane’s interior. “We’re here because someone shot at the house?”

“Yeah.”

“Did Shane get him?”

“No.”

She sits up and stares into my eyes, her hair a blonde cloud under the hood of my hoodie. “You were in my dream. Do you remember?”

My stomach falls out the bottom of the plane. “You were inmydream.”

Daisy puts her head down on my shoulder and goes back to sleep.
