Her eyes opened comically wide as she was getting something for her efforts.

"You left me, but you freed my time up to find somebody more."

Her wide eyes narrowed. "Morewhat?"

"Anything, really," I said softly. “She’s nothing like you, thank God.”

She smiled viciously at me, shoving her way out of the elevator the moment the doors opened.

"I thought you wanted to talk," I said blandly, throwing on the business face I used with any regular asshole I came across, including my ex.

"With you?” She slapped my chest hard enough to sting.

I rocked back on my heels, sliding my hands into my pockets, and said nothing, knowing my lack of response would infuriate her. I'd given her enough of a reaction and I'd wear the consequences of that at some later point. Jess’ venom knew no bounds.

"You're always like this!” she shrieked, hitting overdrive in seconds. "I can't talk to you, I can't get any sense out of you. You're impossible!"

I tilted my head to one side and held my silence.

Whatever she wanted, she washed out this round. I stepped out of the lift and headed towards my door, my key in my hand.

"Don't you ignore me! You're always so mean," Jess raged.

I had to laugh, turning it into a cough into my fist, angling a curious look sideways.

Matty leaned against the wall as he played on his phone, his face completely blank. Apparently he was as used to Jess’ tantrums as me. I was surprised they lasted a year.

Happy Jilt Day to me.

Jess was still raging as I slipped my door open and held my foot in place, blocking the doorway, so she couldn't barge her way in.

"What do you want, Jess?" I managed calmly, regretting my anger from before, but none of that was left.

“Money,” she hissed, and swiped up at me violently.

Cute, considering she was a foot shorter than me.

"I gave you five."

"Five minutes?" Matt looked up from his phone, confused.

"Five mil," Jess snapped at him, the figure rolling off her tongue like so much pocket change. "Wake up, Matty. Follow along like a big boy, now."

He mumbled something I didn't understand.

Jess turned her fury back at me. "That M better change to a B pretty fast, Ford."

I shot. "Or what, Jess? We went over this. Five mil was a fairly big payday for you, and for eight weeks of utter hell, you fleeced me. Congratulations. Why don't you go and stand on the corner with Matty?"

Regret and self loathing slammed me the moment that I let the vitriol affect me.

"Asshole,” she said to my back.

I said nothing else, sliding out of the doorway, closing it softly.

No way in hell was Jess working her way back into my life. I wasn't over the last damage she did in a not so glorious eight weeks.

Eight weeks. The first few days were cute, until I realised what a gold digger she was. Because I bought into the line she strung me along, wrapped in promises of family and Christmases and forever sort of love. Then she dug nails in, and hadn't let go since.
