Yanking out my phone I sent off a text to my lawyer, Richard.

Me:Jess is back, be ready for whatever she throws at us.

Richard:Jesus, I’m booked until after Christmas, but you want to catch up while you're in town? I'm in the building.

I knew he didn’t mean the Plaza.

Me:Let's see how it goes. I'm pretty packed. Maybe after Christmas.

Richard:Calendar’s always open for you, man.

Richard Townsend was another Colombia buddy. He flew through law school, earning himself a partnership in one of the country's top law firms within five years. Now, he headed up my legal team. A natural force of his own, the lawyer focussed on business contracts and had nothing to do with marriage or relationships, but he researched for me and could write a prenup with the best of them.

The moment Jess read the terms, she was gone. Our wedding day.

But sometime between when I said the words to Nisha and now, a few blocks and a short walk, I knew how right my hand felt wrapped around hers, that whatever I felt for her was real. The freedom to choose who I wanted, rather than being persuaded by the sort of girl I wassupposedto woo.

Nisha was different. And perfect.

Fuck me if I don't want her.

But with all my faults and the damage between us, would she still want me?

CHAPTER SIX

NISHA

Icurled in the recliner, draped in a soft squishy robe and sipped an iced tea–not the Long Island sort or I’d never be able to get up afterwards–while a lovely girl who’s name I forgot curled my hair.

Forgot, because she was one of ten beauticians working on me like I was the bride, not a last minute date for the event. Mani, pedi, the whole basket of services and more primping and priming than I ever experienced in my life.

As Ford’s date.

I swallowed too much iced tea and choked.

“Are you okay?” The slightly accented voice behind me asked, patting me in the wrong direction, encouraging the drink to go down when it was insistent on heading back up to find a convenient exit.
