“Are you that blind, Aryan? Do you really not know why I’m jealous of that fat bitch? Because I’m worth ten of her! She’s rich, entitled, and spoiled, yet my boyfriend thinks she’s beautiful. When he recoils from my slightest touch,” she spat venomously.

Aryan had sighed and realised that there was no getting away from that fact. He did recoil at her touch.

“You’re right. I do think she’s beautiful. That doesn’t take anything away from you, Arshia. It just means that we’re not right for each other.”

“Well, good riddance to you. You’re an idiot who is going to regret losing me,” she had said nastily, as she walked out of the door.

She was right. He was an idiot who was in love with the wrong woman. And he was also in the unenviable position of telling Jessie that Deep was cheating on her. What the hell was the protocol when you had to break such unpalatable news to someone? Especially when you’d rather walk on hot coals than hurt said someone in any way.

Then, like a stupid hero from one of those boring romcoms that Nivy had forced him to watch so many times, he’d had the grand idea of giving her flowers.

However, since Aryan had never bought flowers for anyone in his life until then, he’d had no idea about how one went about it. And between his mother and his sister calling him every five minutes to confirm that he was on his way to the palace, he hadn’t had the chance to go looking for a florist.

When he had caught sight of the roses blooming in the palace gardens, it had seemed like an answer to his prayers. It was only when he walked towards Jessie’s room that he had seen the elaborate flower arrangements strewn around the palace, and realised how paltry his peace offering of one rose was.

But Jessie seemed to have liked it if her reaction was anything to go by. And what a reaction!

When he had walked into her bedroom, Aryan had planned to offer the rose, say his piece and get out - hopefully, in one piece - because with Jessie in a temper, there was no guarantee of personal safety.

But the minute she had heard that he wasn’t dating Arshia, she had leaned forward and plastered her lips to his.

And he… he closed his eyes and kissed her back, all thoughts of her impending roka forgotten.

Jessie wound her arms around his neck, and Aryan pulled her closer, deepening the kiss. His tongue teased the seam of her lips, and when she gasped in response, he sent it in to conquer her mouth. But his Jessie wasn’t going to take that quietly. Her tongue met his in a duel that left them both breathless.

When they broke apart to catch their breath, he stared into her wide eyes, knowing that she had never looked more beautiful in her entire life. Her face was flushed, her lips rosy and swollen, and her eyes blazed with passion.

But she was also about to get engaged to another man.

Aryan set her away gently and watched as realisation and regret dawned in those lovely eyes.

“Do you plan to go ahead with the roka, Jessie?” he asked, even though he already knew the answer.

She nodded, her eyes filling up with tears. One slipped down her cheek, as she took a step back.

Aryan reached out his thumb and wiped it away gently.

“Then, this is wrong. I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“No. It’s my fault. I’m sorry,” she replied.

Before they could argue about who should shoulder the blame, there was a knock at the door.

“Jessie?”

It was her brother, Veer.

That was when Aryan realised that Jessie could never keep her head in a stressful situation. She shoved him towards the window with a squeal.

“Don’t come in! It’s bad luck to see the bride,” she called out loudly.

Aryan dug his heels into the plush carpet and looked at the crazy woman who was pushing him around her room wildly.

“That only applies to the bridegroom, and only on the wedding day,” he pointed out in a whisper.

“Then come up with a better excuse to keep my brother out of the room, because if he comes in and sees you here, he’ll rip your face off,” she hissed.

“Only if you tell him that you kissed me. Were you planning on doing that?”
