Madison was happy with what she had been capable of individually, but being betrothed to a king who could shift, along with all of his subjects, when she could not … could be intimidating, to say the least.

And it wasn’t like she was being paranoid. No one in the kingdom of Willowfrost was particularly fond of having a half-breed for a queen.

She smiled at her reflection as her mind ventured back to Fletcher and how he had been treating her compared to what she had been used to her whole life.

He acted as if she were his queen already. He had even been trying to protect her from the hate mail she had been receiving since her arrival.

Of course, Fletcher wasn’t even letting her read the mail. He was having one of his enforcers intercept it, making sure nothing was too threatening. But so far, all the messages were only nasty comments and letters addressed to her. And those were the things Madison could handle. It wasn’t anything new to her, or her family for that matter.

Bullying, she was used to. Fletcher was a different story. If he really did care for her, how much spite could one king take when his queen was the cause of all the troubles?

The anxiety in her eyes was obvious in the mirror.

"How much can Fletcher actually take?" she mused. "How much longer can he stand the hate from his own subjects? How much longer will he deal with the disapproval and the naysayers?"

She was more anxious over how Fletcher would handle everything that came with being betrothed to her than she was over the bullying she would surely face.

Madison was finally successful at pulling her auburn hair back and off of her neck. Her lightly colored violet eyes gleamed back at her as she tucked away a few loose strands.

"Enough dwelling on this shit. I’ve got work to do," she told her reflection.

She hated that she cared so much about the kingdom’s thoughts about her, including Fletcher’s.

Madison checked her watch. Still time enough to get to the store as well as have breakfast. She grinned at the thought. She knew what would be waiting in the dining room.

She grabbed her shoulder bag and headed downstairs.

Fletcher was already waiting for her at the table, like he had been every morning, with the meal served and ready to eat.

Madison had thought that he would have stopped doing this at some point, but still, every morning, there he sat, waiting to eat with her.

“Morning,” she said, slinging her bag to the floor before heading to the table.

Fletcher rose and had a devious smile on his lips. Madison’s skin prickled, and her body grew warm with desire at the sight of him.

He approached her and drew her into a passionate kiss, leaving her more than a little light-headed.

When he released her, Madison tried to casually find balance as he pulled out a chair for her to sit with him.

“Good morning, Maddy.”

Fletcher only sat once Madison had.

She loved looking at him.

Even though they had been sleeping with each other in a frenzy of hormones, she still couldn’t get enough of him.

Her mind whispered doubt about his feelings again, but she silenced it by asking questions.

“Any morespecialmail for me today?” she asked, taking a bite of her toast.

Fletcher’s eyes flashed protectively for a moment, but it was enough for her to notice.

It was the same look that made her think that maybe he really did care for her, but she also knew she might be seeing things. Her mind could make her see anything if she wanted it enough.

“Nothing any different than the rest,” he replied a little too casually for her.

She suspected something more, but it was probably not too serious. Most bullies were full of nothing but empty threats.
