Madison liked her soon-to-be mother-in-law, but she was persistent.

Still, she was hesitant to answer. “I don’t know, Fletcher. But I have to get to work. I’ll see you when I’m off.”

She turned and headed out of the door before he could ask any more questions.

She wanted to enjoy this moment in her life, but a part of her felt that there had to be something else to it. Her heart ached for Fletcher, and she wanted to be united with him in every way, but she couldn’t help but remain guarded with her feelings.

He had been trying to get her to set a date since she moved in. Not only that, he had also been wanting to know more about her past and who she really was.

Madison sighed as her mood dropped swiftly.

There was one thing she never wanted to discuss, especially with her future husband, and that was talking about her feelings about being bullied all of her life.

She didn’t want to share that with anyone, let alone him. What if he thought less of her?

Worse, he could see her as weak, which was unacceptable to Madison.

TWO

FLETCHER

Watching Madison walk away turned Fletcher on.

It didn’t matter that she was pissy with him. On the contrary, it ignited his fire for her even more.

All he wanted to do was pull his mate into his arms and whisk her upstairs, where he could strip her down and ravage her body over and over.

Maybe then he would be able to release her from her hesitation about the mating ceremony.

"Yeah, right. It hasn’t worked so far, and we’ve been going at it like animals,"he muttered disgruntledly as he headed out of the dining room.

He had been doing everything he could to make Madison feel comfortable and know that he wanted to be with her whether there was a contract or not, but she was proving to be much more guarded than he had thought.

Every time he tried to peel back a layer, ask a personal question, or even pin down a date for their union, she would change the topic or just simply shut him down.

Fletcher didn’t want to pressure her, but he did want to find a way that wasn’t too sensational to show her that she was his true mate. He had tried multiple times to tell her, but she withdrew or freaked out whenever things became a serious topic between them.

Especially if it seemed as if things were heading toward the emotional side.

If he was a lesser man, he would’ve thought it was possible that she didn’t return his feelings, but his shifter senses picked up on how she felt around and with him.

Madison definitely had feelings for him. She was just scared.

Maybe that’s part of the whole issue. If she could only shift, she would be much more in touch with the part that called to him.

He shook his head. "No. Don’t think about that," he instructed himself. "She already feels like shit for not being able to shift, I can tell. And these damn threats and hate mail aren’t helping."

Patience. That was all that he needed.

He thought the separate bedrooms were a good idea to ease her in. Now, he was wondering if they were only hindering his progress.

He shrugged as he headed for the sitting room to catch up on his email and news.

Fletcher would play her game and let her have her space … for now.

He had just sat down and cracked open his laptop when he heard the all-to-familiar voice of his overly-involved mother coming into the room.

“Fletcher?”
