“Mom …”

“I’m just saying. Think about it and put your big boy pants on. Be straight with her.”

This was why he hated this argument. He had nothing to oppose her logical observations. It was easier to just submit. “You’re right.”

Fletcher’s mother smiled and patted his cheek before heading back out.

She turned before exiting. “Don’t forget to get it done. No more excuses.” And with that, she saw herself out.

She was right. He just hated to admit he was nervous about Madison’s reaction to it all.

Right now, it didn’t matter. He had other things he could control. Or at least try to.

Fletcher headed to find his beta, Trenton. Fortunately, he knew exactly where his most trusted friend would be. In the training center, helping one of the pups get control of their shifting while fighting.

Trenton looked up and saw his king approach.

“That’s enough for right now,” he said, resting a hand on the teen’s shoulder. “Sire, what can I do for you?”

Fletcher hated when Trenton called him that. He was his best friend yet insisted on formalities, especially when they were in business mode.

“I wanted to talk about the … mail you’ve been diverting lately.”

Trenton nodded and headed to the office attached to the training room, holding the door open for Fletcher to enter first.

Fletcher seated himself in the guest chair, forcing Trenton to take his own office chair.

“So, what do we know?” Fletcher asked.

His beta didn’t look pleased. “Nothing good. The letters keep coming, but we still have no lead on who it is, which hinders us from finding out the motive behind them as well.”

Fletcher growled in frustration, mirroring the wolf inside him. “Damn it!”

“Sire, if I may. One of the young men, Leo, suggested that it could possibly be a distraction.”

“Our enforcer, Leo? A distraction from what?” Fletcher was growing irritated since there seemed to be more ideas and fewer answers.

Trenton shook his head. “Well, we aren’t sure, but it could be something to distract you while bigger things are at play. As a precaution, we are all keeping a special watch on any and all things pack-related.”

Fletcher stood. “That’s not enough! What if these aren’t a distraction? We have to figure out who’s behind them so we know how real the threat is.”

“I know, Sire. We have all our trusted sources on it.”

Fletcher paused and looked up at Trenton. He felt bad for taking his frustration out on the only person he could truly confide in, but he was sure his beta knew it was nothing personal. Fletcher couldn’t get anything done effectively if it wasn’t for Trenton.

“I know you’re doing the best you can,” Fletcher said finally. “I just wish we had more, that's all. I get why it being a distraction is a theory, but I don’t believe it myself.”

“What makes you say that?”

“I don’t know.” Fletcher shook his head and looked at the ground, finding it easier to share what he was about to say that way.

“There’s just something inside me that says I need to take this seriously. Whether it’s a deranged person or someone very meticulous, it doesn’t matter. If something happens to Madison on my …”

Trenton interrupted him. “Nothing will. I assure you. We have security on her and all over your kingdom. More than before.”

Fletcher nodded his thanks, forcing himself to calm down. He wanted at least one thing on his to-do list that he could handle. He had hoped it would have been this one, but it hadn’t played out that way … yet.

“I trust you have it handled. Please keep me posted on all you find when combing through her mail. I’ll keep indulging in the fable that it's just out of spite unless there’s something we truly feel she must be warned about.”
