Trenton nodded and said nothing, allowing Fletcher to leave without saying anything further on the matter.
He wanted to believe wholeheartedly that it was all just a distraction and that no one meant real harm to Madison. He knew how the kingdom felt about her not being able to shift. And it scared him. Madison was more vulnerable than any other shifter simply because she couldn’t shift. Simply because she couldn’t access all her powers, which Fletcher knew were locked inside her.
Fletcher was determined that he would be the reason she would be able to, but she had to accept him and his feelings for her first.
He didn’t want her to ever believe he thought that she couldn’t handle herself. That would be the biggest insult to her. And he didn’t think that. He just couldn’t stand the idea of anything happening to her, especially if it had been in his power to stop it.
Either way, Fletcher had made up his mind. He was going to start sending an enforcer to the store to watch over Madison and protect her. Starting right now. He walked out, dialing the number of one of his more trusted enforcers, and gave him the task.
She could be pissed at him all she wanted as long as she was safe. And what he needed to make clear to her was that was all he wanted. That and her, every little bit of her, now and forever.
THREE
MADISON
Thankfully, the irritation of the morning had waned as Madison passed her time at work. She was currently occupying herself with helping a customer.
She enjoyed interacting with the people. It helped her know that all questions were answered about her fabric, as well as making sure they were treated properly.
“The original designs on all these pieces would speak for themselves even without the magical properties.”
“Well, thank you for saying that, Mrs. Tomlin.” Madison wasn’t in the business of taking compliments lightly, especially if a local could expand her brand by word of mouth.
She held what people thought of her work in high regard. It was something she was able to control and be proud of.
Part of her couldn’t help but think that if she showed her own magical capabilities and how they could be used for the good of the kingdom, tensions would ease about her not being able to shift.
But each time Madison indulged in that kind of thinking, it was always quickly followed by the blunt truth of reality.
Like now, no sooner had her customer walked out of the door with her purchase than a group of shifters came in.
They immediately caught Madison’s attention. She knew what kind of groups to keep an eye out for based on profiling alone.
This was one of them.
They were all males, and they were all young. The kind of shifters who felt the need to prove themselves.
Shit.Madison was alone in the shop.
When the one that Madison could only assume was the ringleader laid eyes on her, a cruel smile twisted his mouth, and he led his crew over to her.
He was a touch taller than the others and dressed in sharp, clean-cut clothes to match his wanna-be status. His features were strong and hard, and it helped him look older than he likely was. But she could tell that he was younger than he looked. Madison knew better just by his unchecked arrogance.
“Look who it is. If it isn’t the whore herself.”
Her lips raised threateningly as the crowd knew they had made it clear why they were there.
“If you’re not here to buy anything, I suggest you get the fuck out,” she hissed at them as she backed away.
The one on the right of the leader tilted his head like a curious dog. “Now, why would we do that? Is it because you command it?”
“Yeah, sorry. You’re not our queen yet, and if we have anything to say about it, you won’t be,” the broad henchman on the left spat.
This wasn’t Madison’s first encounter with assholes who thought that they were better than she was. It was, however, the first time she had to deal with a directgrouphere in the kingdom.
She had backed herself against the wall and made sure no one was flanking her with the store empty. All six were right in front of her.
