“What just happened here? Are you all right?” Max asked, kneeling to help Madison.

“I’m fine” was all she offered curtly.

“I need to know what happened here,” he demanded again.

“I said I’m fine! I handled it. That’s all there is to it. So, if you want to be helpful, maybe help me organize the display cases again.”

Max was silent for a moment before telling her what she already knew. “I have to report this to the king.”

“Then do it. But I handled it, so there’s nothing to report.” With that, Madison turned on her heel and headed straight for her small office in the back.

She wanted to scream in frustration, but she couldn’t let it show. She always needed to keep it together.

She flung her door open and slammed it shut.

Her breath was fast and heavy. She was about to lose it.

Madison tried to steady herself and sat in her chair. But the moment she relaxed, her body doubled over in frustrated tears.

She was so tired of this shit. There had to be an age where you grew out of the being bullied stage, right? And since it had always been a part of her life, it didn’t make Madison feel any better that she always let it get to her.

It made her feel weak to let it affect her.

And this is why we’re hiding in the office right now. Lose it if you have to. But don’t let anyone see it. You might be the target of bullying, but the least you can do is maintain your dignity.

Madison finally calmed her breathing and heard the chime go off on her phone.

She pulled it out of her pocket and saw that she had a message from her twin, Addy.

Hey, are you okay?

Madison should have known that what had happened, and her being so worked up would have sent a ripple through to Addison.

Before she responded, Addy sent another text.

I could feel something was wrong. What is it?

She took a deep breath, calmed herself, and messaged back.Everything’s good. It was nothing.

Madison started to put the phone back, but it rang.

Addy was calling her.

She obviously didn’t believe her text and was now calling to confirm her suspicions. She couldn’t be fooled by her own twin.

“Hello,” she answered with a sigh.

“Don’t tell me you’re good when you’re obviously not,” Addy snapped. “Now tell me.”

“It really was nothing. Just a group of boys who needed a lesson in manners.”

Addison was silent for a moment. “Fine, if you don’t want to tell me all of it, then that’s your business. I can tell you’re better now, but you must have been really high-strung to let them get to you …”

Madison couldn’t deny that she was.

“But that’s not the only reason I’m calling you.”

“Oh?”
