“I’ll have coffee as well. And how about three pieces of pie, all different flavors? Your choice.” He smiled at the twitterpated Heather, but Lily noticed his eyes stayed on her.

His attention lit the fire in her loins even more. She wanted to pounce on him right there.

“Is that okay with you?” he asked.

Lily nodded and sipped her coffee.

Heather smiled at Gabriel before leaving to put in the orders. She could have been a ghost for as much attention as he paid her. His eyes were set on Lily, and she could feel it.

It was intense, but she didn’t want it to stop. She didn’t want to feel too cocky, but it was as if she had already hooked him. She felt as though he wanted her as much as she was aching to taste him.

Calm down! You’ll get your sex when you two decide to move forward. Get it together, or that’s not gonna happen!

Lily shook her head to clear it. She needed to say something to start the conversation. “So, I have to know, how is it that you are having trouble in the love department?” She shocked herself at her own bluntness. Why was that what she chose to say, of all things?

Gabriel chuckled. “Straight to the point, aren’t we? I don’t mind that.”

“Really?”

“Of course. Let’s lay this all out now so we can actually get to know each other after. Then, that way, we can enjoy ourselves and take the pressure off.”

Lily sighed in happiness. “That sounds like a great idea. Still, I’m sorry for being so bold.”

“No, don’t be. Usually, only my mother is, so it’s refreshing to have someone else do it for a change.”

“Are you close with your mother?” If they were going to cut straight to the facts, then Lily was going to take advantage of it.

“Yes. She’s the acting matriarch of the pride.”

“Wait, I thought you were in charge.”

“I’m the alpha, but she still has a role.”

“And your dad?”

“Gone.”

She could tell there was more but decided to save that one for another time. “I don’t know if those are dumb questions. I don’t know much about shifters, and that’s what makes me the most hesitant,” she admitted.

Their waitress returned with their pies and his coffee.

“Anything else?” she asked him.

“No,” he responded kindly while still keeping his vibrant green eyes locked on Lily.

She was trying not to blush.

When the waitress was gone, he answered. “That’s okay. I don’t expect you to know a lot. Everyone seems to be different. I’m just glad you already know what I am, so it’s something we don’t have to deal with in the future.”

Lily had never thought of that being an issue for them.Huh, making more sense as to why he may have signed up. He can't assume every woman out there would accept a shifter.

“Truth is, I signed up because I want a family,” he continued. “To build my legacy. I’m not finding the spark with any females in my pride, and I just don’t have the time to convince an ignorant human why they shouldn’t be scared of me and whatnot. My mother is actually against this idea, so I’m hoping I can prove her wrong, even though I have yet to do that. Ever. How was that for honesty?” he asked, grinning at her, his teeth gleaming even in the dim café lighting.

Lily was struck. She wanted this man more and more. She couldn’t explain it. But his little speech just now oozed authenticity. He gave her the feeling that he would never lie to her, no matter what. That was important to Lily.

Suddenly, the pressure was off, and the rest of the evening went as if they had always known each other.

There was no pie left, and they were on their second pot of decaf.
