"But the humans are not being mistreated, this is a misunderstanding. We need to talk to whoever is in charge and explain—"

Something in my expression stopped her. I brushed my hand through my hair. "This is more than a simple misunderstanding, Alahna."

She blinked, confused.

"If whoever is leading this operation, what did Christina call them, the… Terran Confederation, if they wanted tofreethe humans, they could have simply contacted and threatened us with their superior firepower. They could have simply asked first and then demanded," I explained what I knew of warfare, how I would have dealt with this situation.

"But they didn't. Instead, they went after a species across the Dead Sea in the middle of the Cold Season. Why?"

Alahna shuddered, grasping what I was trying to tell her. "Because they want Thyre."

I nodded tightly. "Freeing the humans is a ruse. I'm not sure who they're trying to convince with this ruse, their superiors or their soldiers, or both, but they're after Thyre."

"My ancestors came on a spaceship," Alahna said.

"I'm aware, and my ancestors shunned their technology and forced them to give up everything they brought with them if they wanted to settle here." My fist hit the table and made it shake, our ancestors clinging to our traditions and beliefs might get us all killed now.

"Alahna"—I turned to my mate—"do you think it's possible that any of your people still have knowledge of those technologies? Have any hidden weapons we don't know about?"

She gnawed on her lip, deep in thought, probably trying to remember things that were said or done.

"Bertram would know," she finally said. "My grandfather used to tell me tales of guns that could shoot further than an arrow, he…" She remembered something. "He had these odd-shaped metal pieces he called ammunition. He never said if he owned a gun or not, but he showed the ammunition to me, so yes." She smiled tightly up at me, beginning to understand our dire situation. "There might be some left, but I don't see how a few could help us."

"I need to send messengers to Dreaming Summit and the other human outposts and find those weapons."

"Brogan." She stopped me with a touch to my arm. "The humans here—us—are loyal to you and the khazar. None of us want whatever these other humans have to offer. There is a reason our ancestors came here."

"Alahna," I grasped her arms and looked at her beseechingly. "Whatever you know, you need to tell me."

"All I know is that my ancestors fled Earth because it was overpopulated, polluted, and oppressed. I think it was the last part that sent most over the edge. They hired a spaceship to take them far away from the Terran Confederation."

"Oppressed?" I followed up, because I had heard the other explanations before, but this one was new.

"I don't know much about it. My ancestors who came here were my grandparents' grandparents. But my grammy said that Earth used to have many different cultures and races before they united and changed Earth's name to Terra. She said it brought many advantages, but also many disadvantages, like the loss of individual freedom, which was what our ancestors sought the most and why they came here and preferred to live technology-free."

I clasped my hands behind my back and walked to the window to stare out into the darkness. Snow was falling again and appeared like little vortexes wherever they hit some sort of light source, reminiscent of the thoughts in my head.

"Hey." I saw Alahna's silhouetted reflection in the window approach me from behind.

She slung her arms around me and rested her head against my back. "It has been a long day, Brogan. Let's go to bed."

I sighed. As much as I appreciated her invitation, I didn't think I could sleep just yet. Tension held me in its clutches and my mind wouldn't stop going in circles.

Alahna's hands clasped the buckle of my belt and unfastened it. She slowly moved around my body, and when she was in front of me, she sunk to her knees, pulling my breeches down with her.

I hadn't realized my cock was stiff, or maybe it sprang to life the moment her mouth was in its vicinity, either way, a deep moan escaped me when her hands clasped my shaft, and her lips curled around it.

I closed my eyes and relished the warm sensation of her lips, the way her hands held me tight, but soon that wasn't enough. I didn't want her to just suck on me; I wanted her. I wanted to be inside her.

"Alahna," I moaned, lifting her to her feet.

"I'm here, take me any way you want," she said, creating a storm inside me with her words, her offer.

Our lips met in a deep kiss before I turned her to face the window, pulling her dress over her head. She was so beautiful from every angle, but I didn't think I had ever worshipped her back as much as I did right then.

My hands moved up her sides. I kissed each of her vertebrae and felt her shiver under me. Goosebumps rose where my fingers trailed up her flesh, but it wasn't from the cold. Her skin was warm and soft.

I cupped her breasts and gently kneaded them while tugging on her hard, erect nipples.
